Do you also get the feeling that much of the trouble we are wading through would be non-existent if there weren't old issues of an imaginary nature we try to come to grips with? What would be the first thing we'd have to erase from our historical memories to be able to have something resembling world peace?

God there are so many things...where to start. OK I think we would need to erase WW1. Why WW1? Because everything started there. WW1 was bad by itself already but it was also one main reason for Hitler to join and candidate in the NSDAP and since many Germans felt that they had been treated badly by the rest of the world after WW1 many were on his side. It would have been much harder for him to gain control if he hadn't had the topic WW1. Of course right after that followed WW2 and the Holocaust and even after the war had ended Germany was torn into pieces and of course then the Cold War started between the USA and the Soviet Union which led to a battle of the USA against all Communist countries (Korea, Vietnam, Cuba). During that time the USA and Russia also began producing more and more nuclear weapons. I could go on and on but I think the main aspects are in here already.
WW1--->Hitler--->WW2(Holocaust) ---> Cold War--->nuclear weapons--->about at least 3 other wars--->...

If you take the first one out all the rest would never have happened or at least would have hopefully never happened.

Easy! The first sin...and every one after that...but that's been done on the Cross. Each person accepting the forgiveness of thiers brings us one step closer to world peace...
