The problem with religion, or any deliberate lack thereof, is that people will impose their opinions on others, because everybody just has to be right in their own little world. I personally don't give a hot hell what anybody does or doesn't believe. I believe what I believe, and anybody who wants to impose their beliefs on me can go pound sand. Atheists can be (And often are) just as belligerent and self-righteous as anybody with a religion, and there's a few answers here to this question that are great evidence of that, saying nothing of the obvious position of the person who asked the question in the first place. You're just as adamant about forcing your opinion that there's no religion or God on people, or else you'd have the good sense to keep this crap to yourself.
On a side note, if people didn't have religion, they'd just find something else to kill each other over. Religion is an excuse to do such things, it's not a driving factor. If the popular position were atheism, we'd wage just as many wars, probably for the sole sake of crushing any people with any ideas of a higher power.
I've always found it terribly amusing that atheists regard this nation's problems as being a direct result of its religious standing, when in reality, most church-goers just go to mass, say their "Hail Mary's," and go home, which kinda makes me think religion doesn't have a whole hell of a lot to do with anything. Once again, people will just use whatever disagreement they have at the time to justify whatever they bloody feel like. Blaming any isolated excuse to make folks dead is ignorant. I don't blame religion, or a lack thereof, I just blame people. *Shrugs*

I totally agree with you! And I say this everytime I discuss religion - It is there because humans are scared of dying so we make up this imaginary place where everything is perfect and blah blah!
If god is real, he would keep up with the times and make the bible an e-book!
And the bible is a book of rubbish! Saying that god put Adam and Eve on the Earth. There is no such evidence that they did. But there is evidence that humans evolved and dinosaurs existed. IF this man was so great, then where is the evidence? And no one can say the bible because the bible was written by some people who thought 'yeah should we make up a story and say that its real?'. Sorry if I've offended anyone but until there is good hard evidence, I will never be convinced. A book is not evidence. That's like saying that Pinocchio was a real boy!
Oh and because of religion, we have a lack of shopping on Sundays! See what this pile of poo has done to our lives?

It would bring about so much change but it would never happen. Religion has "enlightened" so many people that the thought of getting rid of it would bring war. Every society in history has had some kind of higher being. Total Peace can truly only be attained if we all gave up our religious beliefs. Or a single religion dominates the world.

Because if we did that each religious denominations would not be able to have control over the people who they have brainwashed as well as not able to collect money from them.
Religion is nothing more than a way to exploit the ignorance of mankind....
400B.C man thought that when the moon blocked the sun "god" was angry but now we know why the moon blocks the sun..
Early man thought that when the ground shook "god" was angry but now we know it is an earthquake and know WHY it happens..
You see what i am getting at? Religion just wants to keep people ignorant with regards to things that happen around them everyday and want to use that as a way to put "fear" in them..
Society can do much better without religion but also would be able to advance more without religion as well...
religion hinders any type of progress that science makes or tries to make; why do you think that the religious right is opposed to stem cell research?
Also religion is regarded by the common people as true; by the wise as false and by rulers as useful..
The last part is very important and one can see it as being true, just look at the past christian missionaries killed native american idians for not converting to christianity.. or killing people during the salem withc trials and on and on....
Even today it is used. President Bush said "god commanded me to take out saddam" or using religion to hinder the rights of people simply for wanting to be with someone of the same sex
Religious denominations think that they can dictate what you, me and everyone else can and can not do in their own home...
Screw that crap..
Time for everyone to wake up and realize that religion is nothing but myths and fairytales and ruining peoples lives
poster Equality For All-- has it all wrong... Religion is the CAUSE of 99% of the wars that have beenn fought, YEAH religion brings peace nice try

Totally see where you are coming from and going to.
But in fairness it is not 'religion' that is at fault here. it is narrow-minded bigots who cannot respect other people's rights to hold opinions that are different.
Just look at the sanctimonious replies you are getting, esp the Jesus ones. What chance would a follower of Buddism Sihkism Shintoism etc have with the Jesus Crew?
The Yanks are especially focussed on the narrow-mindedness of fundamental Muslims. But they totally ignore the Christiam fundamentalism coming out of their own "Bible Belt" which frightens me much more than Islam.

it is good to have freedom of speech,in some countries they havent even got that,i agree with your sentiments love thy neighbour, but i cant agree about your thinking on religion,as i am a christian and know that if it wasnt for god then there would be NO hope.there is a lot of negativity going around about religion, but forget so called religion, cos the most important thing is to have jesus in your life, after this much will become clear.

I agree - im not religious, dont believe in a god, but I dont knock other peoples faith, I understand that its very important for some people, just not for me. Irespect their decision to worship and wouldnt dream of being abusive toward them.
Saying that though, I detest people who try and ram it down my throat. Especially the ones that knock on my front door trying to sell religion like double-glazing.
i asked a simple question on here the other day and got a lot of abuse from religious people. My question wasnt aimed at them, if they dont believe in science thats fine, they should not have answered my question with sarcasm and abuse.
I would like a peacefull world too, and I would like to think it could happen some day.

From the clues in your question you were raised in a Christian area and exposed to Christian ideas, and, like many of us, you were told many things that confused you were intended to be mysteries and could not be explained. Me, too, and I shared your view. Then out of curiosity I read the Qur'an. Unlike the Bible, there are no mysteries or contradictions in it. It is entirely consistent from start to finish.
Anyway, it isn't religion that causes snobbery and war but good old human greed, for land, for power, for status. People join political parties to satisfy whichever greed they suffer from, and small groups of people with like aims, cause all the trouble in the world.
