Yes and no. In a way we all compare ourselves with each other constantly, because that is part of normal life. There are some who do it more than others. It can lead to healthy competition, but also to obsessions and bitter rivalry. The latter should be avoided.

Some people need inspiration and need to look up to someone who can give them leadership and security. Others are not in such need and strong enough to be themselves, and even give leadership and inspiration to others.
Personally I am more a leader and inspirer than one who needs help from others. And I do not really compare myself to others, as I know that I am somehow unique. Having said that, I still do keep an eye on my environment and observe if my own work is doing any good and helps others to find themselves.

The best advice I ever received was: There will always be someone smarter than you (or dumber), or prettier/handsomer (or uglier), quicker than you (or slower), or better at some things than you (but you are better at some things than them)...so you'd better just be yourself...because no one else can do that better than you.
