A person is admitted to a hospital after attempting suicide. After a few days of detox the person is moved to the psych ward. The person has had a personal psychiatrist, who now takes over treatment. If the person who attempted suicide is no longer suicidal, has cognitive impairments but is still oriented to person and place, and most importantly does not want a treatment that the psychiatrist wants performed (in this case: Electro-Convulsive Therapy), can the psychiatrist force the person into treatment because the person has been shown to be a threat to oneself?--or according to patient rights can the person still refuse to have ECT as a treatment option?

I used to talk to this guy online when I was a teenager (10 years ago). Back then, I gave him my address because he wanted to send me a book. It ended up being a Bible, which I didn't mind. Anyway, this guy started getting obsessive and psycho with me about 4 years ago so I told him to leave me alone. He did...until NOW. Now he's emailing me with some really freakish claims about how my personality is horrible and how I need to take responsibility for what I've done (stop talking to him?) and how I'm not pleasing God and all this other really horrible stuff about how he thinks I'm having sex and abortions, etc. etc. It is COMPLETELY out of line! I told him I didn't want to talk to him, but he continues to send insulting emails to me about how I have personality problems and am disrespectful, etc etc. when it is HE who is projecting all this stuff onto me. Why would someone act like this in the first place...and what can I do? He has my address.

I'm interested, because Maddy Jinx has explained she's a student of women's studies - and puts a few arguments forward that have been discredited repeatedly. Are the WS tutors guilty of not telling Maddy the 'full truth' - perhaps even telling 'half' truths? Do they explain HOW things are worked out (as oppose just the outcome)? etc. etc.?

"Women who are licensed medical doctors make about $.60 on the dollar compared to the male counterparts in the same field. Women who are computer scientists also suffer some the largest gender wage gaps in the United States. Why is that?"

So...do women's studies classes only give misrepresentations of reality by omitting detail and leaving the student to make their own conclusions (i.e. to assume patriarchy or sexism or waffle blah blah)

Feminists have long complained about negative portrayals of women in the media and popular culture. Yet feminists are not in the least concerned about the negative portrayal of men and boys. In fact they actively encourage it.

Concerted contempt for men now seems to have become pervasive in popular culture, from advertising to political talk-shows. This has very largely been as a result of negative depiction of men by the media.

The things the media present and the manner in which they are presented - notably on television and in Hollywood films - obviously have a powerful effect in the public mind. When viewers are constantly being bombarded with images of men being put down, subjected to snide 'asides', slapped around, generally treated as idiots or otherwise abused, viewers eventually come to perceive of this kind of behaviour as being normal and permissible. How do you feel?

I screwed a lot of things up in the course of my relationship, which has caused my partner to resent me. (Although I make amends, I don't handle his initial "Hey, you screwed up" complaints very well...and I can't seem to learn to stop making mistakes.)

His resentful behavior and treatment of me makes me resent him in return. It's like because I've admitted that everything is my fault, I'm not allowed to argue anymore when he's being unfair, overreacting, or attacking. On top of that, I hate feeling like a bad person and perpetually rejected.

We both want to make the relationship work (together for almost two years) but we don't know how to stop feeling sad, angry, and bitter.

How can we overcome this?

Do you think we can?

Hi, I'm a psychology student and know most of the practicing psychologists in my city either personally or through someone else, because of my research and academic experience. I want psychological help but I don't want it to be from someone I know. What should I do?
Has anyone been in this situation?

I'd much rather pop a pill every day rather than having major surgery, and I'm curious why some women choose surgery instead.

Cultures have always valued female life more. A penile surplus (reproduction requires minimal male involvement and women can only bear so many children) meant that men have been expendable. It is men who have been used for dangerous jobs and other risky endeavours (war).

This is still the case. 93% of workers who died at work due to fatal accidents or violence in 2005 were men (5,300 men and 402 women): http://www.bls.gov/iif/oshwc/cfoi/cfch0004.pdf

Also, around 84% workers who die due to work-related disease are male: http://www.ilo.org/public/english/protection/safework/accidis/globest_2002/dis_eme.htm (requires a bit of math)

However, having a job that entails risk does not reap financial rewards. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that "job attributes relating to … physically demanding or dangerous jobs… do not seem to affect wages." http://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/1999/Oct/wk1/art02.htm (note how the bar is actually slightly negative)

There have been several conditions identified that are associated with right brain dominance ie: autism, asperger's syndrome and lots of literature/studies on the bearing it has on people's lives/character/personality/abilities. But are there any disorder's in direct opposition to Right B dom condition's like asperger's that concern the person being LEFT brain dominant? Are they as serious as the previous mentioned? Are they just as common? I have heard nothing at all about people with a medical problem of being left brain dominant.

The shorter male lifespan; the fact that the great majority of violent crime is committed by males; and the incredible rate of young male suicide. Are we ashamed to admit our gender is weak in some areas? Or do we only want to discuss things we can blame on feminists?

Is this an old wives' tale ? Have anym of you ever heard of this before ? If you wear your coat inside, do you get cold when you go outside ?
