About a year ago, I moved into a high-rise apartment building and over time, I started to notice that a lot of mentally handicapped people live in the same building. I often ride the elevator with many of them, who are truly as nice as friendly as they can be, and it is nearly impossible to avoid them, but at best I can only smile while I think on the inside (Go away, don't talk to me, etc.)

There is one such lady who always talks to everybody and strikes up conversations most of us would deem inappropriate, unless you have a close relationship, which I don't.

The other day, I saw her coming and she saw me trying to hide behind the stairwell door, until she got in the elevator. My husband then scolded me saying that what I did was rude. I couldn't argue from him, because he's right, and I hate myself for having such an attitude toward people who have never harmed me.

Why do have such feelings? How do I get over them?

Does anyone else feel like this? Or am I alone?

Back in the 1970s a famous politician once declared "By 2010 we will have a 3 day week, because machines will do many of the jobs humans do today" (I can't remember who it was).

The second part of the prediction has more or less come true. Technological progress, automation and the IT revolution has meant that less labor is required to make stuff. In the 1970s a factory with 1000 workers had a lower output than a factory with 100 workers does today. Even service jobs are slowly being replaced by machines. My local supermarket, for example, has introduced self-service check-out tills and fired half of the staff.

But what about the first part of the prediction? If it takes less and less people to make more and more stuff, why do people need to work ever longer hours? It doesn't add up. What are all these people actually DOING in their job, if machines do most of the work anyhow? Could it be that most "service economy" jobs just move wealth from A to B, rather than actually create it?

I fell out with my close female friend-we didn't speak for 4 months-we got too close for comfort, I fell for her, she didn't feel the same. To deal with this, I broke contact-(not the best idea-I know!)

We recently started talking again via Facebook, I don't ask how she is, she don't ask how I am!Though she says what she's upto. She also says she hope's I'm ok+to take care. She also has a boyfriend now.

Before I cut contact, we used to tell each other everything-(even about sex life!),had constant contact, met each other regularly, she said she thought about me a lot, cared about me a lot etc.....

Contact is slowly increasing, still via email/Facebook though.I'm also in touch with her best mate(she contacted me 1st).

1. Does this mean she genuinely wants to remain friends?

2. Is she just being "NICE" with the 'hope ur ok', 'take care' comments?

3. Will relations get better or the distance remain?

We WEREN'T a couple-just extremely close friends.
