Is learning the recollection of memories that are already present in the soul, or is learning the acquisition of the new, provided that the soul has possession of no previous knowledge?

“This is Plato’s doctrine of reminiscence, in which all learning is a kind of remembering of knowledge already present in the soul. All teaching takes the form of helping the learner to recollect things he may not be aware he knows, by reminding him through a process of questioning which awakens the knowledge already latent in him.”

Is imagination limited to the rearrangement of previous experiences and perceptions, or is it possible for creativity to fashion a completely innovative idea that has never existed before?

“Yet even when imagination outruns perception, it draws upon experience for the materials it uses in its constructions. It is possible to imagine a golden mountain or a purple cow, though no such object has ever presented itself to perception. But, as Hume suggests, the possibility of combining a familiar color and a familiar shape depends upon the availability of the separate images to be combined…. A congenitally color-blind man who lived entirely in a world of grays would not be able to imagine a golden mountain or a purple cow, though he might be able to imagine things as unreal as these.”

Please list ANY sources (fiction, nonfiction, film, music, etc.) you know that discuss Memory and Imagination or that use it as a recurrent theme throughout its work. Thank you!

If someone wants to have sex with a horse, why tell them they shouldn't? If it makes them happy, then I'm happy for them. Also, I'm sure the animals like it. Some may argue that we shouldn't have sex with the animals because they have no choice in the matter. We do kill and eat animals though. So having sex with an animal is wrong, but killing one isn't? No Bible quotes please. Let's use our rational minds.

P.S. - I don't have sex with animals.

hey,

So, I have this assignment for sociology. I have to list what my position in this world is.

My professor/book describes position as: A status is a position within a group. There are a number of positions that people hold. People have positions they hold at home (parents, spouses), at church (deacon, finance committee member), at school (student, SGA representative) and other places. What each of these groups accomplishes (functions) and the types of behaviors people engage in are different. There are two types of stations: ascribed and achieved.

I have two already. One is a student and the other is a daughter. I need a third one. I don't know what to put down. I am currently not involved in activities at the college at this moment.

Can some one help me?

Thank You!

I have myself also lived in apartments for the past 10 years but I am still astounded by the depravity of my neighbors. It seems everyone of their nights isn't complete without a few tall cans thouroughly consumed, multiple domestic arguments (usually over blatant infidelity with immediate neighbors), several dozen of their haphazardly driven hoopty cars driven in and out of the complex and their halfwit kids running around until well past midnight. I have always imagined home ownership to be an indicator of a sensible and upright life but on the flipside how come apartment living seems to be the magic formula for moral decay and degeneracy?

Everyone should get an education. Education can be the difference in living well and living in poverty. But what if everyone had a college education?
Then who would do the work like janitorial work and cleaning, fast food workers, painters, construction workers, factory workers, busboys, etc?

Everytime someone asks this question I loose the will to live.

However, I have noticed that over the hundreds of times it has been asked, it is always "The Chicken or the Egg", & not the other way around.

As this question has never been answered, do you not think that the only correct answer must be "The Chicken", as it always come FIRST in the question.

Also, if you look long enough at the word CHICKEN it just does not look right ! - or is it just because it's past 1am.

It's my body, and my choice, right? But no doctor will do it. No surgeon will do it. No doctor will refer me to anyone that would. But if it's MY body and MY choice, shouldn't I have the right to choose whether or not I want to keep my arm, especially if I don't really use it, and I don't think I need it. Why is it any different with an unborn child?
