a) basic human nature (or God, if you will)
b) society (de-facto social contract)

Freedom is basic in the nature of us all. We have unlimited potential. We have an inbuilt desire for wholeness. Carl Rogers (the psychotherapist) called it our "actualizing tendency". Eastern spirituality calls it our drive for Self-Realization or liberation (in Sanskrit, "moksha").

We are also born with a social instinct. Humans (all of us, but especially girls) are 'hard wired' to bond with other humans. As we grow as babies, toddlers, infants, children, we make frequent choices motivated by the desire for human love. We learn, usually in frequent small increments, occasionally in traumatic leaps, what we "have to do" (duty) to get love and to be accepted in the circumambient society. We learn what Rogers calls "conditions of worth" (unique to each individual).
