It started out that, as nomads, they have no fixed address, so they never fit into the bureaucratic systems of the countries they lived in. They couldn't be tracked, taxed, and so on, as easily as other citizens. Their "free spirit" status made them seen as uncontrollable and therefore "dark" (as in shady).

They were excluded from "normal" society by this, and ended up taking work no one else wanted, also collecting recycling and garbage, or living off crime. This has developed over many centuries, and people are in the habit of seeing them as a kind of human vermin. It is really intense, and they have terribly hard lives, hard to imagine.

I saw a film where the local people wouldn't let their kids go to school because gypsy kids were there. So the gypsy kids were forced to stay "home" (in this case, an actual garbage dump) and couldn't get an education, even though they desperately wanted to go to school.

They said that they would fix the path in my mother`s garden for £60 they did a rubbish job using £5 worth of cheap gravel and sent 3 big men to my mother saying it will cost her £1200 or they will `put her windows in` she paid up of course.
When she phoned the police to complain, they put her through to the Gypsy Desk. She was horrified to find that the Gypsy Desk was there to help the Gypsies ! The police did nothing of course.
My cousin ran a small riding school in her field opposite her house, the Gypsies moved on to the land, put concrete bases down for their caravans and brand new 4X4`s, erected their satellite dishes etc..etc...she had to drive out of her village and into the next to access her land via the land of another farmer. It was impossible to run her business without proper access to the horses and the Gypsies were so abusive no customer would go near anyway. It took years and years to get rid of them and that was through action in the European Court.
The only crime we had in our village was during the now forgotten Stowe Fair when they would camp outside the village and then break into houses , sheds etc..etc..and steal from the shop.
My young daughter, who was about 5 years old at the time, befriended a Gypsy boy of about the same age. He would come to us of an evening and we would entertain and feed him, when they left they stole the very expensive alloy wheels from my car and smashed the rims in the woods by their camp to get the brand new tyres off.

That is just my experience with them, not prejudice or lies, not myth or deception, but the plain truth.

They are the scum of the Earth.

Because they have a different way of life than what is accepted as the norm. Proper travellers unfortunatley get tarnished under the same brush as new agers who leave rubish everywhere. Gypsy's are traditionaly hard working, but our government dont treat them to well or our society which can seem a little racist and the predjudice against stinks as far as im concerned. Unfortunatley if you dont life in a brick house you are considered outside of the law, travellers should have more areas put aside for them to live in without all the carap that they get at the moment whenever they come within 5 miles of middle englanders precious back doorstep.

Easy to blame.
Do you mean gypsies as in persons of nomadic habit,
or do you mean gypsies as in perons of Romany descent who've bought up land & built houses on it?
Or do you mean useless crusties?

I think the first is the correct definition.
They are not liked because a noticable fraction engage in theft & crappy workmanship. Also, any time they turn up in the area, the local criminals have a spree because they know the Gypo's will get the blame.

The second, (ex-gypsies) are not liked because noone like folk getting one over on them by doing something they shouldn't.

And the last are not liked because they are a waste of space, a noticable fraction engage in theft and they generally make a lot of mess.

Like most minority groups, it only takes a few to give the rest a bad reputation. All the ones that don't steal & don't make a mess don't get noticed.

First they are different. They travel have to find some ground to stay on which can upset people who like the land as it was. They also like to leave rubbish when they stay because the lets the next gypsies know that it is a good place to stop. But of course people dont like rubbish lying about

I would suspect bigotry for the most part. They were not originally of European descent ( some think India some Egypt) so naturally they did not fit in well with the surrounding European neighbors. Like many other groups that have been discriminated against they begin engaging in behavior that did not endear them. Bigotry can lead to antisocial behavior and that behavior can lead to more bigotry and prejudice and on and on. It's a downward spiral and an old story that has been repeated over and over with different groups throughout history. Americans initially didn't like the Indians, then they didn't like Africans, then they didn't like the Chinese, then they didn't like the Irish, then they didn't like Jews, then they didn't like Italians, then they didn't like ... you get the picture

Gypsies in my opinion, are at best, the luckiest people, why?, because they have the freedom to roam anywhere, (hense another name for them is roamany) and do anything, their kids have no schooling, and they live off the land for free. Ordinary folk are the idiots, we live in our nice homes, pay excruiating bills and rent/morgages, drive our expensive car, pay road tax etc etc the list is endless. So who are the luckiest people THE GYPSIES.

you obviousley mean travellers and not romany gypsies . travelers arent liked due to the fact they steal rather than pay for things , leave litter and mess all over sites they illegally squat on and generallly cause a lot of problems in the area they are in at the time .they bring noise and dirt to other wise clean areas and treat people as they treat there animals with no reguard what so ever . there out to rip people off for any work carried out they have no reguard for anything that isnt there property and they raise there children to act in this manner also .

They pay no tax

They suck off the state social welfare

They drive new cars with no tax

They turn every place they stop into a festering tip

They cost me money in taxes To clean up after them

They prey on old people doing shoddy work such a tarmacking the dive or cutting down trees.

They fly tip rubbish

Everytime they come near the crime rate goes up.

You give them a chance and they turn around and rob you.

They steal dogs [my friend has had 4 stolen in five years from there compound]

They are cruel to animals

Do I need to go on.

They are not Real Gypsy's these days, just a bunch of littering, thieving travellers.
