I have myself also lived in apartments for the past 10 years but I am still astounded by the depravity of my neighbors. It seems everyone of their nights isn't complete without a few tall cans thouroughly consumed, multiple domestic arguments (usually over blatant infidelity with immediate neighbors), several dozen of their haphazardly driven hoopty cars driven in and out of the complex and their halfwit kids running around until well past midnight. I have always imagined home ownership to be an indicator of a sensible and upright life but on the flipside how come apartment living seems to be the magic formula for moral decay and degeneracy?

What percentage of people are "Section 8"? A lot of people in that program don't care what they do to their places. If it gets too bad they just move on to someplace else and trash it too. Living off the government gives a lot of people a "don't care" attitude. When things go wrong they look for Uncle Sam to put his hand out and move 'em on.

This is touchy.

I have been so poor I had to live in a $130 a week motel. That's the bottom. And what I saw there coincides with what you say. But as much as the people there disgusted me, I couldn't write them all off, because I sensed that there HAD to be other people there like me: basically decent and clean-living, just going through an economic hard time.

I don't want to be a Pollyanna about this, but I find that the people who drink and fight and act out draw all the attention, and that the people who are "normal", who would fit into a really nice neighborhood, fade into the background in an environment like apartments or a residence motel. They often LIKE it that way. They're a little abashed and embarrassed about being there in the first place, where they know they don't belong. --And as a result, you'd have to look very hard to see them. But they are there.

In life, I think scum often gets all the press and play. The squeaking wheel gets all the grease.

I'm clueless as to WHY... I suppose it is a reflection on society. Also the laws that make it VERY difficult for an owner or manager to refuse to rent for other than fiscal reasons.

As a matter of fact, the apartment building I've been in for the last 5 years is in the process of evicting a loud, white-trash whore... the domestic fights with her BF's, the door slamming, the profanity, her latch-key son, glass bottle beers in the pool, jumping from the balcony...

Ah well... thank God my police department will take reports over the internet !!

People sometimes care less about a place that they don't own, for one thing...they don't have the emotional and financial investment that would make them 'care' about the place. People who are reared properly don't usually trash their homes, rentals or not.

Of course, some people actually LIKE living a trashy, violent, slobby life - and it is easier to do in apartments where you can duck out on the damage repair cost.

A lot of homeowners are slobby, violent, trashy people, too - perhaps we should just accept that the human race has a percentage of trashy, slobby, violent people who inexplicably love their lifestyles - and they all have to live somewhere, unfortunately.

sounds like u live in a low-rent complex.u get what u pay for.we had no such problems at the apartment i lived in prior to marriage, but we paid a lot for the peace and the privacy.if u are in a "bad" section of town, the only solution is to move.good luck, noisy neighbors are awful.we only had one in the entire time i lived there.i called the cops on them twice, and the complex asked them to pipe down or move.they shut up fast.a good apartment manager will take action against bad neighbors.ps-i have two college degrees, and grew up in a 7 bedroom house,so i dont appreciate being called "trash",i lived in my beautiful apt. with scenic view for 9 years, and i loved it.

That happens in a lot of places, apartments, trailer parks, slums ...but not everyone in those situations is that way.
The reason they are in those places (many times) is they don't have the self discipline or motivation to get a good education, thus a better job, and move up.
Some had a poor upbringing and think the way they are is just fine. They either don't know any better, or just don't care.
Unfortunately, stupidity, laziness & sloth are not illegal.

Even though I am a Christian, we still evolve as time goes by. Some are way behind in the evolution scale. Some folks just came from the status of being a new soul and have not learned because of their inability to learn when drugs and other things get in the way.

Hmmm....let's see, Low income is in character with poor
education, drop-out, etc.. which leads to renting the cheapest
possible place that you can afford on your minimum wage job,
with your minimum wage car, for those that work. Now a good
majority of these Dwellers don't even work and wait for the
1st of the month for their Welfare Checks and Food Stamps and
Medical Cards etc... and then for the first week of the month
it's McDonalds and Burger King and for the next three weeks it's
pawn anything you can get your hands on to include the Rent-A-
Center Furniture and T.V. . The mind set consists of Live For
Today and tomorrow will take care of itself..... "why should I bother, I still have 5 cigarettes in my Pack" and then tomorrow
Bum a cig where you can........blah blah blah you get the idea.

Steve I have to tell ya....I've been in a LOT of people's homes...(single family homes, apartments, trailers, condo's) due to my job and believe me....SLOBS are not limited to apartments.

In my experience renters seem to take less care of their apartments
than homeowners and i think many renters have the "hey, it's not MINE so I don't care" attitude.

But MANY homes that I've been in have been absolute PIG STYS and they are owned by the residents......so I guess slobs will be slobs no matter where they live.

I'm not generalizing....I'm simply stating my experiences which are not open to debate. They happened.
