Do things happen for a reason? If you believe that they do, then how can we have any control over our own destiny?

Ever tried to change someone's mind? It's especially hard when someone is coming from a completely different paradigm. In fact, they may reject your message entirely because it doesn't make sense to them. So what to do? Should we reposition our argument within their worldview, in terms they understand and relate to? Or should we try to get them to expand their worldview? Which is more effective?

For a long time, the advertising world believed in the old "hierarchy of effects" or "AIDA" model. AIDA was a late 19th century selling acronym that stood for something like "Aware, Informed, Desire, Action." Some also call this "think, feel, act." More recent research suggests that our attitudes do not reliably predict our behaviors.

Consider a typical new year's resolution to lose weight, for example. If you polled the person on December 31, you would get a strong "behavioral intent" to lose weight. But that person's actions might ultimately speak louder than his or her words.

We learn from what we see and hear as children. Even educational programs are based on the "hear/see/say or do" method. Does it continue to function in adults? Consider advertising. We are heavily influenced by products we are told that we need to have. Couldn't violence work the same way?

Below is a letter from Larry Iles, writing to the Index, student paper at Truman State University.

"All around us, locally, are two reasons why that debacle should not only not be happening, but indeed why the reverse triumph to "babyface" President Bush should have taken place, as it more recently in the Red-Green coalition victory in equally troubled Germany's economy. In Kirksville here look in a third of nearly all the major store sidewalks and you will see, quite typically, dead, closed businesses with unshakeable non-prospects. While the recent representative, near quarter-thousand strong this campus-attended "Speakers Forum" debate on in Iraq confirms. Massive Columbia protests turn-outs and the 4,000-plus UMC Green Kith Brekhus vote Congressionally locally yesterday, young people, with huge educational debt costs yourselves, you do not want the Congressional Accounting office estimated $9 billion Iraq invasion minimum figure cost. (the below is a letter in response to a Mr. Zoumaras in the Truman State U. student newspaper)

Taking you all to task for what he oddly indicates as a sustained and unfair critique of Student Senate without him giving you the defense, and natural-justice entitlement, of reply, as he names no allegedly fine senators or even evasively discusses the issue of value-for-levy on students' money that you have been valiantly trying to raise all semester. To write so McCarthy-like and pompously is not good, or accurate uncondescending history, or heavens, even herstory, given the gender representativeness of most Truman students. It's shameful taunting.

My friend is attracted to older (30-40 year old) women and when he told his aunt (who he never has been close to) about it, she said that they were too old for him and he needs to find someone his own age. When she told him that, he just got so angry and was talking about cutting her out of his life. He said that he would have rather her told him that he was not meant for any woman. This was a couple of years ago and he still is angry at her.

Should he still have a relationship with her or is it best for him to cut her completely out of his life? I am trying to help him but don't know what to say to him.

Feminists are often insulted by China's deliberate aborting of female children before birth. Aparently, they do so to control population. Their logic is "100 men cannot simultaneously impregnate 1 woman, but 1 man can simultaneously impregnate 100 women".

However, these same feminists who are insulted by this are often pro-choice. Arguing, that fetuses are not living humans. Based on this ideology , China isn't killing girls, China is aborting "nothings". Again, based on this ideology, China isn't insulting or underminding females, it is underminding "nothings". Yet again, based on this ideology, China isn't violating a woman's body. It is simple purifying the woman from certain "nothings". Why be insulted, then?

Also, is the US more moral for equaly killing both sexes? Is this half as bad, or twice as bad?

For your information, I am disgusted by this barbaric practice. However, I am against abortion in any situation. Therefore, my disgust is logical and consistant.

Than you.
