Does having an appliance (e.g. tv, microwave) plugged in but not on use electricity.
Basically I am wondering if I have my tv, dvd & vcr plugged into a power bar but turned off, will it still use energy? Trying to cut down the power bill.

i've read that peanut butter can be turned into diamonds by pressure cooking it in extreme heat. if this is the case, is it easy to do, and if so, why would people still today buy diamonds for thousands of dollars when they can make their own by using peanut butter which is $5.00?

If you can't answer this, then please realize that evolution can't answer it either. If you think YOU can answer this without nothing more than speculating, you are lying to yourself and others here.

NOTE: I am referring to the VERY FIRST living thing (the one without any parents). Please, no "theories" (ie, abiogenesis, etc.), but facts only.

If you were to fill out 3 sweepstakes cards, using regular bic ballpoint ink (lets say in blue for the sake of argument), a fine-tip blue (again!) marker or a no. 2 pencil (regular, not coloured), and you write exactly the same info, samy size, etc..., which is heavier? Which drops to the bottom of the bunch of entries and which would stay on top.

Theoretically speaking of course, because I'm sure there not enough difference in weight to make a diff. in the sweepestakes, but I've been dying to know this.

My theory: marker is the LIGHTEST because it's mostly water which evaporates and leave a stain, while ballpoint is the HEAVIEST beacue it stays on the paper. Pencil lead is made up of particles that disperse, but enough stay on the paper to mark it, so I think, being lead, it would be heavier than marker.

I'm not a scientist, I'm a nerd :)

And thanks in advance to anyone who reads/answers this!

When I was a kid - about 30 years ago - I rarely got a shock from static electricity by touching the car or anything else. In the last 10 or so years, every time I touch my car, other doors, or even shelves in the supermarket I get quite an electric shock. Does anyone know why this would suddenly start within the last 10 years? Could the EMFs from cell phones or computers have something to do with this?

i don`t get this explain how im supposed to do it For each of the following tell which unit you would use to measure the amount. Answers provided for the first three; you fill in the answer for the remaining three.

Amount Length (meter) Mass (gram) Volume (liter)
From town A to town B
*This is big so we used kilo which means thousands. Kilometers

*So, we measure long distances in kilometers.
Amount of medicine in a syringe (shot)
*This is a small amount so we use milli, which means one thousandth (.001). Milliliters

*So, we measure small volumes in milliliters.
Mass of the cereal in a box
*This is a medium amount so we use the base unit gram. grams
The diameter of a quarter.
The amount of gasoline you put in a car’s gas tank
The mass of an elephant

and heres the website that they gave me http://ts.nist.gov/WeightsAndMeasures/Metric/lc1136lv.cfm
