The percent grade sign is the sign that has a truck going down a triangle. There is usually a number associated with the sign and the hill that you are about to venture down. What does that number mean?

The percent of grade is the rise or fall per 100 horizontal units. In other words, a 6% grade would mean the road rises or falls 6 in (or feet or miles) for every 100 in (or feet or miles) horizontally travelled. To get the actual degrees of the angle, you have to take the inverse tangent of the grade/100. For example for a 6% grade, you would take inverse tangent of 6/100 which is 3.43363 degrees.

A grade is the ratio of drop to distance traveled. Thus if you drive 100 feet on a 10% grade you will end up 10 feet lower than you started. If you were to drive 10 miles on a 10% grade you would end up a mile lower than you started.

Percent grade is the increase in height for every 100 ft horizontally. Roads are rarely built with grades steeper than 11% for any appreciable distance. A 100% grade would be a rise of 100 ft for 100 ft. run, or 45°.

Grade means "percent of vertical". Zero percent grade is horizontal, 100% grade is vertical. The angle varies linearly between these extremes.

To convert from grade to degree, multiply by 9/10. So a 6% grade is a downward slope of 5.4 degrees from horizontal.
