A 25 year old man is in a great deal of pain. His chest hurts so much he can hardly stand up straight. He has had this pain before, once in a while, but never to this extreme. He decides to go to the emergency room. The doctor asks him to describe what he has done so far today. The man says he had a suasage-egg sandwich from a fast food restaurant for breakfast. He noticed a dull ache in his chest as he ran to class but it didn't hurt enough to worry him. He then went to class at the college he attends. For lunch, he had pizza with sausage and peppers at the cafeteria. He then met some friends at the gym to play basketball. About fifteen minutes after starting to play, the chest pain started. The doctor runs some tests and tells him his heart is fine.
What problem does this person have? What Happens inside the body of someone who has this? How can you try to lessen the pain caused by this problem? Why does surgery work to permanently fix this problem?
