The planets themselves are so far, and it's not like we are landing on them and taking samples. So how the heck do astronomers know what these distant planets are made of?

for some reason lately i have been obsessed with the thought of an asteroid hitting the earth. esp. the big ones that could end human life. i dont know why but i cant seem to shake the fear. i have been doing alot of research. i know that all the little ones cannot be detected yet bc they are very small, but the big ones are the ones i worry about. a BIG impact hasnt happened since the dinosaurs and it scares me to think maybe that time will be soon... please help!

What would you consider to be the best advancement(technology wise) in astronomy so far.

Most of us believe there are UFO's because we've seen some legitimate footage.. They obviously want to contact with us, so why are we still trying to send out radio waves in space instead of focusing where they are coming to us.

Let's say that it is 100% factual that black holes do give off Hawking radiation. How long would it take a black hole of 10 solar masses to completely evaporate (assuming it swallowed no more matter or light for the rest of time).

I asked a question about Light years and someone told me that light travels at 186000 miles per second, so i was wondering whats the fastest we got and:

is there any ideas for us to go faster
is light fixed to this speed or are there permations that would slow it or speed it up.

How far is one light year? things like Eta Carinae's (a sun in our solor system) is aparently 7,500 light years away so i just wanted a rought idea.

I thought that it means what we see from the star is the light that has taken 7,500 years to get to us, (so we are actually seeing the past)?

i might be talking jiberish so can someone help me out

invisible like....you can't see it. I saw one, one day, and it was fast. Faster than blinking. Its true. Can't get any astronomers to verify this though. Kinda like when you see a falling star in the sky, but so much faster, and immobile.

I was at the Miami planetarium last weekend and wanted to see the planets... every first Friday of the month they open the observatory.... there were too many clouds this time, but how well can I expect to see the planets? Will I be able to tell what I'm looking at?

There's a number of people saying No-one landed on the Moon, that it was all faked.
I was born in 1970, so don't remember it at all (of course).
With an observatory telescope could you actaully see the moon landing site(s)?
