So what if you die by an asteroid, or get killed walking across the street? What if you die of old age?
Does it make any difference how you die, so long as it is not too horribly painful? We are all doomed. No one gets out of life alive. You're mortal--you're going to die one way or another.
A big asteroid impact, that will be quick and painless. There are much worse ways of dying. You could be tortured to death. You could die from cancer--very slow and painful--and our draconian drug laws frighten doctors out of giving you decent pain medications in many cases.
I would far rather be killed by an asteroid than by a miserable plague. Think of the children. Over a million children die from malaria in other countries, every year. Nasty, gruesome deaths. Bet most of them would prefer being snuffed by an asteroid, as to the lingering wasting away by the Plasmodium protozoan.
I have an aunt and two cousins who died from breast cancer. Both my cousins left young daughters behind. I am happy that in their cases, doctors were able to make the time they had left comfortable. They did not suffer too horribly.
If you are an american, you are more likely to die from heart disease than from an asteroid. A pounding, constricting pain in your chest.
When I die, I want to be very, very old. And still healthy and handsome. And, I hope to be shot by a jealous husband...

That answer from Natavoni says it all. Must give her a tick.
People talk of aliens and get themselves frightened at the prospect, but how could anything be more horrific than what humans do to each other. What about the hostages of Al Qaida, waiting with a bag over your head for them to execute you by cutting off your head with a knife. And people who rape and torture little children.
Yes, give me the big asteroid any time.
But the chances of it happening in your lifetime are practically zero.
Just stay out of trouble and keep healthy. That's what you should be setting your mind on.

You have nothing to fear, but fear itself.
FDR
I was afraid of comets and asteroids too. I realize now that life isn't about me. Once you know this, you know what FDR meant.

You shouldn't be afraid of asteroids. Most of them are floating in the asteroid belt anyway. If one came, it would burn up into the atmosphere most likely.

Seems to me you don't really have any reason to fear. If you can bring out facts or hypotheses that are well-founded, then you may have something. But you needn't worry about that which seems unlikely.

Well, if it's a big one, we'll have plenty of warning. There's one they are watching and it'll be around in 2880 which gives us plenty of time to do something. Just enjoy life.
