The Moon is waxing when it is going from new to full Moon, i.e when it appears to get larger each night in the sky, from a thin crescent through to full. It is waning after full Moon, when it once again goes from full down to a thin crescent that faces the opposite way from a waxing crescent.

Waxing and waning is referring to the decrease in light across the surface or the increase in light across the surface of the moon. For example, if there is a new moon and there is NO light on the surface the next phase is waxing (growing in light) crescent/gibbous. Then when the light is decreasing...or going back to a new moon it is called a waning crescent/gibbous.

When the moon waxes, it looks like its getting bigger, so you see more of it. When the moon wanes, it looks like its getting smaller and smaller as time goes by.
