Collision with interplanetary debris after its formation. Note the smooth maria "seas" which are areas where resurfacing has occurred. The side of the moon which faces away fron the earth has more exposure and thus more cratering.
The earth has historically had the same cratering, but errosion has wiped out all but the biggest and most recent creaters.

Impact craters are the remains of collisions between an asteroid, comet, or meteorite and the Moon. These objects hit the Moon at a wide range of speeds, but average about 12 miles per second (20 kilometers per second).

By asteroids hitting it........then you have a why!!! because, it was to happen to proect our earth from those major trajectories which would have harmed God's mankind and other creations causing a disbalance, so, moon was created to equalize and neutralise and summarize an unknown equation. Thanks.
