Many products contain the element mercury. Almost every household has a common item that contains mercury, the fluorescent light bulb. Though the amount contained in a compact fluorescent bulb is very small, measured in milligrams, proper disposal will become an important issue as many regions are replacing the old Edison type bulb (incandescent) with fluorescents. Australia and Ontario Canada have recently brought in legislation that will eventually ban all incandescent bulbs in favour of the mercury containing fluorescent light.

Mercury is also a component in the old style thermometer, though many countries have banned this type of device instead using other non-toxic compounds such as alcohol and glycol.

Some thermometers use mercury. Florescent lights have mercury in them. Certain types of electrical switches use mercury. Mercury is used in the gold extraction process.
