1) Late 1980's early 1990's Monsanto, Carhgill, Archer/Daniels/Midland start rolling out GMO (genetically modified) crops (wheat, soy, rice etc.) worldwide. No testing, no oversight, no discussion if it's even a good idea...they just did it. All of these crops are genetically modified to be insect resistant.

2) Starting in the mid 1990's reports start surfacing of declines in honey bee populations. Studies are undertaken and find that honey bees are declining rapidly with no apparent explanation. The latest reports show an average 60% worldwide decline with as much as 80% in many areas.
