The Tennessee House of Representatives passed a bill on Monday that states that no authority can prevent any school from using Native American Mascots. I am appalled. I goes to the Senate next Tuesday. Please let our government know how we feel about this. This represents a lack of respect for the Native people. The country would never be able to get away with this if they were using any other ethnic group.

Up here in North Dakota I know many members of the Sioux tribe who take great offense to the University of North Dakota using, and profitting from the use of the Fighting Sioux logo and name. After many votes by the three tribes involved they have yet to give the university permission to use the name or logo any longer. The university is facing NCAA sanctions if they do not change the nickname.

I am a Native woman. I agree with you, Native mascots are not honorable and are completly disrespectful. It is disgusting that a state government is to ignorant to see this.
I have a feeling this issue is going to up the court ladder. Isn't it sad that our nation's supreme court might be bogged down with an issue that is so evidently clear. It's a good thing the NCAA has ruled against these mascots, at least that is a step in the right direction. What we need now is national education on the topic because there is too much ignorance concerning it. If people knew the details, knew the truth they wouldn't have a leg to stand on as far as supporting mascots.

I hate this cliche but in this circumstance it really is useful. Would we have ever got this far with the mascots if they were black mascots? The answer is no, society would see it as clearly racist. Why are Native people so different? People need to examine their beliefs on that one.

Thanx for spreading word about this important issue.
Take Care!

I wonder if anyone has a problem with a cowboy or a matador as a mascot. How about a trogan or a pirate? Where does it stop?

As a card carrying member of the Comanche tribe, allow me to invite you to shut your pie hole and stay out of things that do not really concern you. I think that they should be used more!

Well the Native people are sort of not here anymore. They sold us their land just so they could get rich. Their selfish people, so I don't really care.
