By having a benefit system are we helping or making things worse? No one likes paying tax, national insurance, etc, especially the amounts we pay. But at least we know it's there to support our country and residents when times are hard.

Now people may shout at me for this bit - it is starting to feel that some people are abusing & milking the system. While the people who genuinely need help cant get it.
Is more being taken out of the system than is going in?
Would we be better off if instead of handing out money we paid wages to people to work in the communities instead?

Case in point:
Arlen Specter said that the bill (Military Commissions Act) sends us back 900 years because it denies habeas corpus rights and allows the President to detain people indefinitely. He also said the bill violates core Constitutional protections. Then he voted for it.

US commander backs Iraqi PM after criticism
Fri 29 Sep 2006 10:32 AM.
BAGHDAD, Sept 29 - The commander of U.S. forces in Iraq issued an unusual statement declaring support for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Friday, after news media quoted senior U.S. military officials criticising the government.

As violence in Iraq worsens, and the USA military can't seem to do anything about it, military and civilian officials in the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq have been expressing concern over the past week that Rrime Minister Maliki has failed to rein in death squads or stop corruption in his elected, unity government. The United States is very weak and can not over rule the Iraqi Prime Minister.

"Recent news articles cite unnamed senior military officials as being critical of Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his government," due to the fact the Prime Minister of Iraq wants to be closer to Iran.
