By having a benefit system are we helping or making things worse? No one likes paying tax, national insurance, etc, especially the amounts we pay. But at least we know it's there to support our country and residents when times are hard.

Now people may shout at me for this bit - it is starting to feel that some people are abusing & milking the system. While the people who genuinely need help cant get it.
Is more being taken out of the system than is going in?
Would we be better off if instead of handing out money we paid wages to people to work in the communities instead?

I have claimed benefits in the past, and I worked my butt off to get off them, even taking on 3 jobs to achieve it. Since i paid my subs i earn my benefits to support me until i found work.

The benefit system is supposed to help us when we need help. It is not there for the many immigrants who have multiple identities to live in the life of luxury..........the truth hurts.........what we need is a good overhaul of the system to oust these people...........

The problem is fourfold.
1) It frequently means that a person can get more money by NOT working than by doing so. Remember it Costs money to go to work - clothes, transport etc: Also a large chunk of any earnings goes to the Government in tax which hardly provides an incentive to work.
2) It is too generous to layabouts - who are difficult to detect.
3) A large proportion of the money given to the scheme ends up in the hands of the administrators.
4) People get used to not working and find it difficult to start again if they find/are given a job.
Everybody who get a hand out in this way and is capable of working should be given a job of some sort even if it's picking up litter. It keeps the work ethic active.

Its an unfair system .... personally i think ppl who claim benefits saying they cant find work should be made to work voluntary .. this may actually encourage them to work and earn their own money instead of staying home smoking dope drinking beer and producing future generations of chavs ....
i also think that if u have more than 2 children the government shouldn't pay any more money for these children ... it may actually make people stop and think as to why they want children in the 1st place ...
dont get me wrong i know there are genuine cases out there of people who need the help, i have claimed benefits in my time but it seems its always the genuine people who never get help ! ...
I think the whole system needs an overhaul!

I think there are people who genuinely need benefits, but I think the majority of people seem to be there through choice. It's all too easy these days to have a baby without being married and then expect the State to provide a flat and an income and to pay all the bills. It's so unfair to those of us who pay Income Tax. Just look at any of the chat shows which are on in the morning and you will see the type of person to whom I am referring.

The benefit system was put in place to be a stop gap for people in between jobs but unfortunatley alot of people see it as a reason not to work.

Alot of people who claim are in real need & once able move into paid employment do so, what needs to be tackled is people who claim for years on end & have no intention of working.

A good idea is to only pay JSA for 6 months, if a Lone Parent don't pay extra tax credit if they have more children as most keep having children with the same partner time & time again.

The only sticky wicket is Incapacity Benefit but why should we pay this to alcoholics & druggies, your choice to start in 1st place suffer the consequences.

Jobcentres & Benefits are trying to tackle the problem but staff are being cut, & human rights bill has put massive restrictions on fraud officers.

Talk to most employees in DWP & they agree with everything you said & would love to see the young unemployable yob out picking up litter, digging pensioners gardens etc but too many do gooders won't allow it

There are many that are milking the system. When you have generations on the system, then that is evidence right there that the only advancement any of those generations have made was how to squeeze more out of the system. I think people should work for their money. The systems should be there for those that truly need it.

Well the benefit system is unwieldy, unfair and way too expensive, so yes perhaps it should go. Trouble is no political party has the guts to even consider cutting public services, let alone scrapping the benefit system, so It is very unlikely then that anyone will come up with a better alternative any time soon!

Why do we would desire to wipe the slate sparkling whilst we can continually previous the debt onto destiny generations who can fix it? That form of element has been occurring for hundreds of years & it continually works out because of the fact there are continually destiny generations. So in simple terms thank your toddlers & grand young ones.

If you're going to get rid of it I want a refund of all I've paid into the kitty since I left school.
