I know this sounds prepostorous, but think about it. Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Churchill were all exremely unpopular in their countries and were initially failures during their leadership. Half the US hated Lincoln and he was assasinated. Yet today, he is considered one of the best leaders America ever had by almost everyone, including people in the South. Roosevelt was severely disliked for his socialist-like policies, and delayed the US entering WWII at first. Churchill was unpopular in the UK even for most of WWII, yet 60+ years down the road, most Britons forgot about this and Winston Churchill is officially the 2nd greatest Briton of all time and considered by the majority of the British to be their best leader of all time. Bush is obviously unpopular, yet recently, the top anti-war man in Washington admitted the troop surge in Iraq is working and that the war has gotten better. The Taliban has almost been completely run out of Afghanistan.
