First of all I’m an Australian, but I pay a lot of attention to American politics. This is basically because Australian politics is pretty boring, has little or no influence on the world and we generally end up doing what America tells us to do in relation to current world events anyway. While watching the current election process I noticed the great division within the American political system. Initially I thought Australian politics was bad, but like always America seems to take it to that next level. There seems to be such a huge influence on this, “us and them mentality”, fueled by character assassinations, labeling and playing the blame game. The current situation in American society reminds me of this quote said by William Durant a famous American philosopher.
“A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself within. The essential causes of Rome's decline lay in her people, her morals, her class struggle, her failing trade, her bureaucratic despotism, her stifling taxes, her consuming wars”
Does this quote ring any alarm bells for anyone or is it just business as usual?

How do you get some kind of closure when you've been mistreated by an irresponsible lawyer. My divorce attourney took my retainer,($1500) then never returned my phone calls, and never filed any papers on my behalf. She even layed out of work on my first court date, sending a partner in her stead who knew nothing of my case. I lost custody of my children that day and the entire case swung out of my favor. I lost at every turn. Later I lost my job and asked her to file for my child support to be refigured. She failed to do so, and I wound up in jail. When I asked why she failed to file the papers, she told me it was because I owed her $1000. She never did anything for me, so why would I owe her another grand? She did show up at my final divorce hearing, but by then the case had swung so heavily in my ex-wife's favor, that it was too late. The final hearing was her only appearance in court with me, and it was only to have the judge approve our agreement.

If a person can afford recreational drugs, doesn't that demonstrate that they don't need welfare? I've never been on drugs, but isn't it easier to quit drugs if you don't have any money?

Liberals and democrats here in Yahoo Q and A like to call George Bush a "chicken hawk". They claim he avoided Vietnam service by joining the Air National Guard, yet has no problem sending troops to fight and die in Iraq. Okay........

So then what was Clinton? Clinton NEVER EVEN SERVED in the military, but had no problem sending ill-equiped Army Rangers to die in Somalia in 1993-94, sending troops to Rwanda in July 1994, sending troops to Haiti in September 1994, invading Bosnia in December 1995, sending US sailors into harms way to maneuver off the coast of China in 1996 as a threat to Beijing, and firing cruise missiles at suspected chemical weapons sites in Iraq in December 1998! So if George Bush is a "chicken hawk" then what was Bill Clinton?

First of all, you only let people collect unemployment for 12 weeks, not 26. Second, to collect it, they have to document how they spent 40 hours each week looking for work. Third, they have to take a drug test every week. The same for anyone collecting any free government aid, WIC, food stamps, welfare. They all have to pass a drug test. If they fail, they have to get treatment, otherwise they get arrested and locked up for 2 weeks. The second time they fail a drug test, they get locked up for 2 months. The third time they get locked up for life, with parole if they do well in prison. The idea here is to get drug users to leave the state and go to a more "drug friendly" state.

Would it work? What do you think?

When did it become acceptable for judges to tell people how to run their lives, on punishment of taking their children away and large sums of their money. Doesn't anyone else see how wrong this is? Is this really in the best interest of our children. Shouldn't there be some requirement of proof that a child is in real physical danger. Shouldn't there be a jury trial before the law can take away a person's children? Testimony from a disgruntled former employee should not be considered adequate. Clearly this is a violation of the 5th and 14th amendments. At what point are people going to start realizing how much of their rights have been eliminated by these types of family court actions?

If a SSgt. in the Air Force encountered a Lt. in the Civil Air Patrol, would the SSgt. be required to salute the Lt. and call him 'Sir'? I wasn't sure if someone in the Civil Air Patrol would really be considered a superior of someone in the actual Air Force, since (even though he has a rank) the Lt. is actually a civilian.

Also, then, would the two be allowed to socialize off base, at a restaurant or the like?

If there are any further details that would be needed for an accurate answer, please let me know and I will provide them as quickly as possible.

Officer Jones stops the vehicle, which is occupied by the driver, and a passenger in the front seat.

Officer Jones contacts the driver, Bannon who provides the Officer with his driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. While Officer Jones is speaking with Bannon, the passenger, Madison who appears nervous, tells the officer he is late for a doctor's appointment, and must leave. The officer tells Madison he must remain in the vehicle until his business is concluded. At this time, Officer Jones' backup officer, Officer Watson arrives to help him. tomorrow they passed a law saying it was illegal to eat strawberry jam on wheat bread. you could still eat strawberry jam, and you could still eat wheat bread, you just can't put the strawberry jam on the wheat bread without breaking the law. but you really, really love strawberry jam on wheat bread, and think this law is ridiculous. would you: a) continue eating your strawberry jam on wheat bread and just hope you never get caught, or b) give up eating strawberry jam on wheat bread because it's illegal and it's wrong to break the law?
basically, do you think it's wrong to break a law that shouldn't exist but does because of other people's ignorance?

In 1998 President Bill Clinton, (D) ordered military strikes against Iraq.

Republicans disagreed and said this was a bad use of resources and that President Clinton was wagging the dog.

Were they being unpatriotic or just expressing their point of view?

Now in 2007 many of us are disgusted by the occupation of Iraq.

We express our dissatisfaction. Republicans accusse of of being unpatriotic.

How can you have it both ways? Were these same republicans unpatriotic when they accussed Clinton of wagging the dog?

How can you have it both ways?

Is this just stereotypical conservative hypocrisy?

Every day I read posts from angry liberals DEMANDING that if I support US efforts in Iraq so much, then I need to enlist in the military and fight on the front lines. Okay...........

I see nothing wrong with gay marriage. Does that mean I need to leave my wife and and marry a man?

I support the deportation of illegal aliens from this country. Does that mean I have to join the Border Patrol?

I support the arrests of criminals by the police. Does that mean I need to join the local police department?

I like eating at McDonalds from time to time. Does that mean I have to apply for a job flipping burgers?

My car (which I enjoy driving) runs on gas. Does that mean I have to apply for a job with Exon/Mobil drilling for oil in the North Sea?

I find it ironic that if you support US efforts in Iraq then you need to enlist, but bytching and complaining about the war in Iraq doesn't require you to do a damn thing.

So many anti-immigration fanatics complain about how immigrants are supposedly ruining this country, and one of the things they complain about bitterly is how most telphone menus say "Press 1 for English". It seems so silly to me that people complain about pressing just one single button for English. Are all the anti-immigration activists really so lazy that they can't press just 1 button for English? If that's the case, I can't imagine how trying it must be for them to dial a 7 or 10 digit phone number! Or is it just that you anti-immigration activists can't stand being reminded that foreign languages and cultures exist? Please tell me why it is such a grave inconvenience to press 1 for English!

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.
Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.
But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors.
I've done all the things you don't like to do.
I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters:

• You are Required to let me stay in your house
• You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
• You are Required to Educate my kids
• You are Required to Provide other benefits to me and to my family (my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself.
I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house.

And what a deal it is for me!!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior. Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you to learn MY LANGUAGE!! so you can communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America

My husband (my/baby's sponser) is in the Army on Active Duty and is deployed. He won't be home for R&R until summer of 2008 (he tired for around the baby's due date, but it wasn't approved). I do have general power of attorney, and special power of attorney stating to "please enroll child in DEERS and Tricare, and get a passport for our child". What do I need to bring? Just the birth certificate, baby's social security card, and the power of attorney? Do I need to bring the baby with me? It's a 4 hour drive to the nearest military installation. How soon do I have to enroll the baby? I'm having a c-section and the hospital I'm going to likes to keep patiets for 4-5 days. I also don't know how long it will take to get the birth certificate or the social security card.

I grew up listening to stories from my dad, who was a WWII Marine. He gave us a good education about the realities of war, which I'm guessing liberals either don't know about, or are in denial about. In war things happen that don't happen everyday life. You capture the enemy, you interrogate the enemy with whatever means seems to work. Liberals need to grow the heck up.
