My husband (my/baby's sponser) is in the Army on Active Duty and is deployed. He won't be home for R&R until summer of 2008 (he tired for around the baby's due date, but it wasn't approved). I do have general power of attorney, and special power of attorney stating to "please enroll child in DEERS and Tricare, and get a passport for our child". What do I need to bring? Just the birth certificate, baby's social security card, and the power of attorney? Do I need to bring the baby with me? It's a 4 hour drive to the nearest military installation. How soon do I have to enroll the baby? I'm having a c-section and the hospital I'm going to likes to keep patiets for 4-5 days. I also don't know how long it will take to get the birth certificate or the social security card.

you usually just need the birth certificate and your id card to enroll the baby into tricare..the baby is covered under your tricare infor for 60days after his birth...so you have 60 days to get him enrolled...also it takes about 30 days to get the birth certificate and 6 weeks for the social security card...you'll have plenty of time..good luck!

Tricare will cover the child from birth to six weeks after birth without registration in DEERS. You should have the birth certificate by then. If there is a Reserve Center for any of the armed forces closer than that base, contact them. They should be able to do the DEERS registration based on the birth certificate and presentation of your dependent ID. The child does not have to be present.
Most military spouses get a passport which includes the infant child on it. That means the passport photo must be taken to include both of you. Your birth certificate and the child's birth certificate are sufficient ID for the State Department to issue the passport.
Hope this helps.

the baby is covered under your sponsorship for 30 days automatically, no enrollment required. this is usually plenty of time for the SS card and the official state issued BC to arrive.

I would call ahead to the base Pass and ID office that you will be going to to find out if the child needs to be physically present( my guess is no.. as they do NOT get an ID card.

Oh, and BTW.. a hint about passport photo: he must be AWAKE, no sleeping or closed eyes allowed in the picture.

Bring all the mentioned documents above. Also call the personel section on the base to find out if there is certain days that they enroll into deers. You also might try a reserve unit near you and they can help (Like the one your husband is assigned to). Good luck and congrads on the new one
