The old open fires that we used to have before gas and electric ones, what was the name for the square piece of metal that was used to put in front of the fire to draw the flames up when the fire was lit.

Until I can get my hot water heater replaced, I have been enjoying my morning bath in my inground hot tub. Will the bath gel and shampoo cause any damage to the hot tub?

I tired making baked apples last night in the micro (thanks, Betty Crocker). The apple caught fire, and I was able to blow it out. There was a great deal of smoke. Will the microwave ever stop smelling (of smoke)? Figures it had to happen on a new microwave...I REALLY can't afford to replace it!

I want to create two different preparations: filling two mason jars with fresh picked white Plumeria flowers from Hawaii. One jar will get filled with flowers and grain alcohol and the other will be filled with flowers and a neutral oil. Can anyone suggest a cheap supermarket available oil that I can use for the oil jar that has no scent of its own and will absorb the Plumeria fragrance?

I have a very small garden in a suburb, about 20' by 60.' It has good sunlight. Most of it is a lawn with a small border full of plants. Is there any chance at all that I could grow enough potatoes to eat so that I don't need to buy them from a supermarket - or is that completely unrealistic, just a pipe dream? I was wondering if I could buy seeds (or whatever it is you have to buy!) and just try growing some potatoes at the end or in a corner...just to keep my bills down and also out of sheer curiousity...

I am the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about gardening...or farming. If I'm talking b/s please put me out of my misery now...but I just can't help wondering...

Many thanks.

There is a hideous dead-body type smell in one corner of my kitchen, but I can't trace where it comes from. I've checked all my cupboards. Could a rat have died beneath my kitchen floor, and if so, how do I find out?

I hate pulling out the seeds and wanted to know if there is a quick way to do it.

my flatmates and i have recently moved out of a place after 24 months of tenancy. we worked things out with the landlord and had the carpet cleaned and got the whole house cleaned. the walls are being painted.

but to make the matters worth, the landlord is carrying out some building work i.e. replacing the worktop in the kitchen (which was a badly fitted kitchen to start with), re-doing the bathroom.

we have agreed to pay for some things (like carpet and walls and damages clearly caused by us) but the situation is complicated.

we also don`t know whether problems like condensation on the bathroom ceiling is our responsibilities.

i really feel like we are being charged extra for improvement works that had to be done anyway. we are willing to pay for what we are responsible for.

how should we go about this problem? some legal insights would be appreciated.

my flatmates and i have moved out of a place recently after 24 month of tenancy. the invently included electric appliances such as hoover and TV with built-in VCR. The landlord claim the hoover and VCR is not working.

do we have to replace it?

the thing is the hoover (cheap cyclone one) does switch on but the suction is weak but ,as far as i know, it has always been like that. we never actually used VCR, as we watch DVD instead.
as for hoover, i think it is just a lifecycle of a cheap vacuum cleaner. VCR we never actually used.

are we responsible for this?
