I have a very small garden in a suburb, about 20' by 60.' It has good sunlight. Most of it is a lawn with a small border full of plants. Is there any chance at all that I could grow enough potatoes to eat so that I don't need to buy them from a supermarket - or is that completely unrealistic, just a pipe dream? I was wondering if I could buy seeds (or whatever it is you have to buy!) and just try growing some potatoes at the end or in a corner...just to keep my bills down and also out of sheer curiousity...
I am the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about gardening...or farming. If I'm talking b/s please put me out of my misery now...but I just can't help wondering...

sure you can grow spuds, they like a sandy type of soil that drains well but there are many varieties that grow in different soil, most gardeners didn't grow them because they were always cheap to buy but that's not the case anymore. so if you're a potato person that eats a lot of them it makes perfect sense to grow them, talk to someone at a local garden center that knows the soil type in your area and you should do fine. good luck.

the best you will get is 8 to 10 patatoes from a plant. How many do you eat at each meal divided ( 2 in to 10= 5 meals per plant)
Soft soil, hill up around the plant, no moles as they will eat them.
Each plant should have 3 square feet. 60 foot long row would give you 20 plants X 10 spuds=200 / by 2 per meal= 100 meals.

well most types of veggies have seeds, Carrots have very tiny seeds that come from the green top. Peas are seeds, and Okra has seeds inside, however, Potatos have eyes. you cut the potato around the eye and plant it eye facing up.
they do need very loose sandy soil in order to grow.

Well potatoes are vegetables and vegetables don't have seeds I heard. But when planting potatoes you are suppose to cut up a potatoe and plant it since it is like a seed
