The old open fires that we used to have before gas and electric ones, what was the name for the square piece of metal that was used to put in front of the fire to draw the flames up when the fire was lit.

We used to have a coal fire,the square piece of metal was used to draw cold air through the fire bottom we refferd to it as the tin,but is was as i remember a fire drawer,my father made it at the place he used to work only one spelling mistake i must be getting better

I always use an old newspaper to draw the fire up, and chuck it on the fire quickly when it sets alight!
I don't know why people are answering grate, fireguard, or damper, we used to push the damper in (a metal flap above the fire that had to be pushed in with the poker) to draw the fire up around the back boiler, so we could have hot water that night, the grate is where the wood and coal sit, and the guard stops sparks jumping onto your carpet/ stops kids getting too close.

we had a open fire in the 60's i can remember that when the fire was lite that we used a large piece of card that filled over the open fire to drew it, a furnace would have a damper and made of metal this would do the job so i think that it would have been called a damper

I still have an open fire, haven't a clue what you mean, mine lights ok on the rare occasions we use it, without any additional equipment

grate i still have one of them fires and its loverly at christmas id hate to part with it ,but it just cost me one hundred pounds to have the coal bunker filled ,,,i nearly dropped dead ,,,look like ill be chopping more wood hehe.
