A square or rectangular two story frame house with vinyl siding is probably the cheapest but durable way to build a house.
Two stories, gives you more square footage with less foundation and roofing. It can also reduce the cost of wire and plumbing. As you know if you locate all of the plumbing on both floors close together the amount of pipe is less.
A rectangular or square house is easier and faster to frame with fewer complications.
Vinyl siding is inexpensive, durable and can be very attractive. It also needs no painting.
Take a look at the houses Habitat for Humanity builds. There are some good clues there. You don't have to be quite that plain in your design but they usually go for the more economical design they can.

My parents built our house before I was born... the only person they hired was the cement mixer to pour the foundation. Being a licensed electician/plumber is definitely to your advantage. My parents enlisted in the help of all their family and friends, all of whom had different talents and abilities in regards to building a house. They all helped and worked together, each contributing whatever knowledge they had. Then they had a massive party when it was built to thank everyone who had helped.

try this website www.byohome.com, it has alot of different cases where people built their own home and t gives cost and everything. Unless its a smaller home, it may not be cheaoer just because alot of times the builders can get the materials for cheaper than any average person. just make sure the builder doesnt try to jack up the prices on you.
