I turn the thermostat down and put on a sweater. I keep unused rooms doors&vents closed. When I cook in the kitchen I use a small fan on the table to GENTLY waft the warm air to the back of the house. I let my pets sleep in the bed to keep my feet warm (hee hee). Plastic sealed over the windows to cut drafts. I put up lighter colored curtains to allow the sun to help heat rooms. I also tend to cook more soups and stews as these seem to be more 'warming' when one is cold. I also recycle all our wood cut during the year from our yard, into the fireplace. When I do that I try to cook with that heat as well. I make sure the insulation in the attic is in good shape and the wrap on the heater as well.

Put a energy saving blanket around the hot water heater in your home and add more insulation in the attic. Windows are the place one loses heat and you need to make sure they are tightly closed or you can use the plastic sold in Lowe's for the purpose of keeping the cold out.

I turn the heat down at night, since I'm covered up in blankets anyway. Also, energy saving light bulbs work well. They're expensive to buy though (although they do last longer than the regular bulbs), so try to get them when they're on sale.

Have the hot water tank thermostat turned down. big savings.

Turn you thermostat down an hour before bed-time. big savings.

If you are due for a replacement furnace, have a high efficiency furnace installed. Very expensive initially but will halve your monthly gas bill.
