Yeah, there's nothing like the smell of death to ruin a dinner party!
When I was younger, an opossum gave birth in the insulation under our house. The momma left and the babies died. Can you imagine the smell?? Oh, wait. I guess you can. :o) The insulation had to be ripped out in order to find the source of the putrid stench.
Is there a crawl space under your house? Maybe you can call pest control to check. If you have one dead thing, you may have several live ones hanging around, too. If the source still can't be found...you can find solace in the fact that the smell will stop...eventually. A decaying rat can only decay for so long ;o)

Sounds like the sink to me - sometimes water can get siphoned out of your U bend leaving you exposed to the smell from the drains - heance the smell of a dead body run the tap slowly to top up the water in the u bend that creates the seal. If the smell comes back - call a plumber. There's a thing called a self sealing waste trap that doesn't rely on water to create a seal so the problem should go away.

I had the same problem on two different occasions. Once it was the water pan at the back of the fridge(actually behind it, had to unscrew panel and everything). It was really nasty. The another time it was a dead rat. You will know if its a rat cos the smell will go after two weeks. If it is the fridge the smell will only get worse. Good luck and happy hunting.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago...Check under the fridge! On some older models there is a pan that catches water, and it will start to smell of that of a dead body. Check it out and good luck to you

It might not be anything as gross as a rotting rat body. It might be mould in you wall insulation or something like that. It sounds like it's definitely behind the wall or surface somewhere so I'd get the damp course checked first as an easy option before you go knocking out holes or anything drastic.

Could it be you? Get somebody to clean and disinfect the kitchen and from a far distance, contact that person and ask if the smell is still there.
Hope that helped

Could be a dead mouse. I have had that happen before. They died down in between the sheetrock in the walls! Nothing could be done just have to wait for them to deteriorate. It sucks. Nothing I put out would hide the smell.

If at all possible, you are going to want to find the dead mouse. It could be in the wall which would make it tough. Go to your local Ace Hardware and they will recommend something for you that will work great.

Yes, a dead and decomposing rat may be in some crevice of the house.
