Garden & Landscape - August 2007

I've got a great big pumpkin that will make the best Jack o'Lantern. But it's August! How do I keep it from rotting before Halloween? I haven't picked it yet but the stem is turning a little dry and I was told to pick it when this happens. And yes, it is fully orange with no green spots.

I was going to purchase Aluminum plant ID tags due to the sun in S. Fla. Then I saw a web site that talked about making your own with soda can's. I did cut up the tags and they look great however they say to write on them with ball point pen to make a depression that will last forever. I find them awfly hard to write on. Anyone have any sugggestions? Are the Aluminum ID tags you purchase easier to write on?

I want to buy some plants for my classroom, maybe 3 or 4. They do not have to be huge. I do not want to spend very much money on them either. I have heard great things about these plants in the classroom- that they are easy to care for and work well in a school setting with kids. How much can I expect to spend on these, and where is the best place to get them? I heard that WalMart was actually a good place because they would be much less than a flower store.

I am looking for:
spider plant
wondering jew
philodendron
peace plant
corn plant

We'd like to prepare our lawn with some nice tulips on the sides and Lowe's is selling them in large bags. Is it okay to plant these now or is it too late in the season?

I tried to grow watermelons this year and the plants grew vines and flowers but no fruit. I had one little watermelon (about 1 inch big) and then it died. What can I do to improve it for next year? Also my cucumber plants made a few cukes but they were small.

I thought about a Boxelder but they attract bugs...I thought about a Bradford Pear but I would like something that grows a little quicker. I don't want a tree that will tower 80 or 100 feet above everything. Just a 25-40 foot tree.

For my October 20th wedding, i am wanting to buy the tiny mini pumpkins for the guests. They will also double as a seat tag as i am tying the guests names around the stem. My question is, how long do pumpkins last once they are picked? Can they be perserved somehow? In your opinion, how long should i wait to purchase and where should i store them until the wedding? Would a garage be ok?
Ok, well, that's 5 questions. lol
Thanks so much for your input

I recently had our garden planted with bluegrass. At first it was growing okay, but i noticed that it looks dry and the leaves look thinner than before. I noticed many red ants were burrowing in the soil, which i guess caused the grass to dry. How do i eliminate them without killing the grass?

The knockout roses have been beautiful but they are tall and the bottom of them are looking slim. I was wondering how to prune them or cut them back to promote growing but not kill them where they don't bloom again. Any suggestions, websites with instructions? Thanks

I don't know the first thing about gardening. But we just bought this house and I
d really like a garden next year.

I've been reading and many people recommend using mulch for the soil. Instead of buying it, how do I start composting from scratch?

Please keep your answers in plain english-or explain unique terms as you go! LOL!!

I'm really new to gardening, like I said.

Thank you buckets!
