Every box turtle I see in my neighborhood is always sick and underfed, I have taken in 3 box turtles to nurse back to health and I wish to be able to release them. Is there a way I can make my own backyard turtle friendly for my box turtles and toehrs around here?

That is unfortunate about the sick turtle you've seen. If taken proper care of with the right habitat and correct food, then turtles should be very happy. Anyhow, about your question. Yes, you can build a box turtle habitat in your back yard and if made properly they can even over winter int he habitat. I was planning to build a box turtle habitat next spring and I found these web sites that are very helpful.

These articles contain info of food sources for box turtles. I plan on planting a variety of their natural food plants in my habitat like roses, nasturtium, melons, kale, green beans, lettuce and strawberries for example.

Another good thing to do is build a small compost pile inside the enclosure so that you turtle will have easy access to worms.

Good luck with the turtles.

Sounds like a handful and an expensive project! It would be easier to just go to the petstore, buy a turtle, a 10 gal. tank, some gravel, a heat light, and a basking rock
