DO NOT BURN POISON IVY!! The oil in the plant that irritates your skin gets suspended in the smoke, causing the irritation in your lungs instead. You can lose a lung, seriously.

The yellow Roundup (for woody plants, not the blue stuff for grass) will kill poison ivy, but it takes at least two liberal applications, and the stuff is expensive. The best way is to pull it out by the roots, which can grow 10-15 feet underground before they pop up again, by the way.

Dress covered from head to toe, and wear rubber gloves. The yellow kitchen type are good, but two layers of the disposable surgical type are good, too, and disposable. After a good watering or a rain, start pulling. Bury it if you can, because it will just grow out of your compost pile. If you can't bury it, put it in heavy duty trash bags and have your hauler take it away.

When you are done, have someone open doors for you, don't touch anything. Put your clothes straight in the washer. Wash them twice -- the first wash without soap. Take a long shower. Believe it or not, the oil in poison ivy that irritates your skin (which is in the leaves, stems and roots, by the way -- why Roundup doesn't completely solve your problem) is water soluble -- soap just spreads it around. Hope you get it all off. Wash anything you touch and any tools you use, because the oil stays there a long time to re-infect someone else, or you later.
