Keeping squirrels out of a garden, especially if there are trees and shrubs around is almost next to impossible. They also love bird seed and nuts so if you have any bird feeders that is a sure invitation for the squirrel to come along for some lunch too. Of course, you could hang the feeder from a pole with a baffle attached making it difficult for the squirrel to reach the food. Make sure you place the pole away from a tree so that the squirrel doesn't use it as a springboard. One person suggested letting your dog chase the poor little squirrel away. If you have a cat, they can serve the same purpose. I usually go outside when I see a squirrel and shoo them away but eventually they always come back so I'm beginning to learn how to just sit back and enjoy them. Live and let live so to speak.
Edit: I love Mr. Answers suggestion. I am going to go buy me with one those dogs.

You can either try moth balls or bounce dryer sheets, they hate the smell of both! I just read about the bounce dryer sheets in a magazine! I guess there good for getting rid of alot of little critters! including mice!!!!
Or if you want to have a little laughter doing it, they sell little plastic dogs that have motion scensors built in them that when something goes by them , they bark and pretty loud, that would sure cure your squirel problems fast, there not expensive, and they operate on 2 pen light batteries and there about 10-11 inches high, I use mine to keep the stray cats out of the back yard! Mines a Dalmation! and it works great!

You will probably never be able to completely get rid of them. A dog is your best bet but I know not everyone can let one run loose in the yard.
Moth-balls can help to deter the little guys to. Netting also helps but they are so smart they usually get around that.
There are also some repellants on the market but I have not used them but they are worth taking a look at.

Try spreading some moth balls in the area; squirrels don't generally like the smell, and they'll stay away. Works nicely for cats and dogs, too.

a dog would help, I know deers are afraid of Coyote scent, so try that. Cat may also help depending on how big the squirells are. but I don't really think there is a way
