I recently bought a house and the backyard had not been done. So, right now it's full of weeds. I'd like to clear it out and put in some grass. What's the best way of doing this?

I need some attractive, fast growing plants to make a privacy screen in my back yard. They should be fast-growing, able to grow about twenty feet tall, not take up too much space, and provide good privacy.

Thanks!

I have a quarter acre of land which has probably only ever had grass and weeds growing on it. It is fairly level and is sheltered from the wind by a growing hedge. The soil is quite peaty. I am in the Scottish Highlands.

I have never gardened before and would like to make a start, grow a few vegetables as well as some flowers.

I am far from fit, so I'd have to take things easy at first!

Any advice would be great.

I am looking for some new houseplants that are either cool, pretty, rare. or exotic.

I now have: caladiums, some cacti, aloe vera, venus fly trap, shamrock, mother-in-laws tongue, and donkey tail.

Do you know of any other plants that do well inside all year round?

I have roots from my pine trees coming up through my yard in various spots. The roots aren't huge, but I can't mow over them either. Will it hurt the tree at all to cut the roots so I can mow?

The bush had a full bloom of beautiful flowers-followed by new buds that turned brown quickly and died. Leaves are not brown. Location is not very sunny, but I have not choice.

Newbie, very newbie, gardener. Got a plant at the farmers market this week, and the leave are already turning brown and holes (bugs??) Think I water it enough, the soils always moist. And it gets 6-8 hours of sunlight. I still have it in about a half gallon pot, the plants about a foot high. Love basil in sauces and spreads, but could be going on my 3rd year in a row killing a basil plant, so thought Id try this site.

Although my cilantro is doing great!

I have an 850 gallon pond. It has 3 waterfalls, a small pond, a stream, and a larger pond at the bottom. I have been having to add about 60 gallons every few days just to keep it at operating level. I know that there's some degree of evaporation and the waterfalls are adding to that a lot, but I'm not sure if this amount of water loss is "normal" or "excessive."

Note: Weather lately has been in the upper 70's.

I am thinking of adding a pond to my yard. I like the shape of this one http://www.maccourt.com/lowes/ponds/lp7918.html because where I would put it has something of a Y shape. I want to keep some goldfish in it, but I don't think 100 gallons is very big for fish and plants. I though about using just a flexible liner, but I worry about it getting a hole and the fish having no water.

Is it possible to use the premade one at the bottom and just sinking it about twice as deep, then using a liner inside so that if it does tear, the premade pond would still hold the fish and some water? Has anyone ever tried this? Or am I just worrying too much? I'd like something about 200-300 gallons total for the pond, plus a little waterfall at one end. Any suggestions on filters, UV, pumps as far as brands to buy or stay away from?

For the last few years my two red maples have had limbs die from the top/outer part down. This year they are completely dead. I suspect borers, but my neighbor's trees are healthy! I cut down one of the maples yesterday and the center part was very soft and even looked like coarse sawdust in some places. There were borer holes. Did the borers just pick my yard and not my neighbors? Could it have been something else? Oh, BTW, I have a very healthy redbud growing between the two.

I live in zone 7 (Nashville) What are some good replacement trees that grow fast and give good shade? What can I do to prevent tree death?

I have a huge problem with it, as it is choking out my rosebushes!! They are (or were, rather!) beautiful and mature bushes and this vine is killing them!! I am afraid to use Roundup because it might kill the bushes! Also under the bushes is a bed of ivy...any suggestions besides Roundup and burning the whole mess down and starting over?

In this picture, it is next to a 6-foot tall fence, as to provide an idea of how big these are. The stem is really thick, and last year we had to cut down the stalks with a machete. It grows about a foot every 1-2 weeks.
