I am new to gardening but would like to grow stuff I see in my garden book like candy tuft or astilbe, or alyssum or foam flower, or shasta daisies, etc.

I am new to this. do you just buy seeds for these at Wal-Mart or something and just throw them out like Zinnia seeds or something??

The poor things need trimming regularly and can never reach their full potential. Surely there are naturally small trees that can be selected for power line areas?

I just started today putting down sod in my backyard. The whole yard is hard dirt. Today it rain and loosend the ground a little so I went to Lowes and bought some sod. I broke up the dirt like I read online about 2 inches and layed the sod about 3 inches apart from each other. I just got done watering to get the roots to settle in the ground. I love in southern CA so it rained for an hour this morning and then the sun came out and warmed the day. I have seen many brand new homes with sod and it is always far apart from each other but I read online they need to be touching... which way is correct? Should there be a small space or close together? The other question is did I lay the sod right? Am I missing a step or do I need to add manure or anything? What is the best way to keep the sod healthy? Thanks for any help!

I think there are too many that look so similar.

why is this?

I mean it should not be too hard to choose, since they all look very similar.

Im 14 years old, (I'll be 15 years old on Sunday, Feb. 25th) and I am wanting to start a garden from scratch this summer.

I would like to grow raspberries, and any pretty flowers that will grow in a kinda sunny and shady area.

I don't know anything about gardening, not even when to start on, so if you could please give me some advice and tips for my garden, I would be very grateful... Thanks!

I have searched the web over and over and I cannot find a seriously in-depth site. I think my trees are a type of white pine- long, soft light green needles and branches that break easily under the weight of ice or heavy snow. The bark is grayish and the sap is white. the cones are slender- 4 to 8 inches in length. Right now, the trees are approximately 20 years old and range from 10 to 15 feet in height. In the Fall, some of the needles turn brown and blanket the ground below the trees. As a matter of fact, within the thickest clusters of trees, the ground is a soft carpet of needles that have fallen over the years. I've yet to find this tree on line.

I'm thinking of hiring someone to put in a patio. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a patio that is either a stamped concrete or a natural stone (maybe flagstone) set in concrete? Are some stones better than others? I live in a very hot climate if that makes any difference?

Well, today I slid down a hill (by accident) because of the slippery ice that covers my backyard. Unfortunatly, my backyard is a living jungle (literally). I got stuck inside a bundle of branches that have thorns around them. I made it alive, but most of my body was stained with blood. So I took a shower and rubbed antiobiotics (Neosporin to be exact). So basically, are thorns poisonious? If so, can you die by them, etc. Thanks~

I want to start a smallish compost bin or pile for mainly yard waste and some kitchen scraps. I understand the concept of what can/can't go into one, what happens, etc. I want an inexpensive way to make one. My ideal spot for this is an abandoned ditch on our property that is about 2 ft deep, maybe 2 ft wide. Could I put it in there if I turned it often, or would I need to build something? I bought chicken wire and stakes at Home Depot (what my grandma used for hers), but I'm not really looking forward to having to pull the whole thing up to turn the compost. Also, it would be fine with me if I never had to take the compost out of the ditch...I would be happy to have it compost and fill it in! Also, I don't have a wood chipper...what is the best way to "grind up" pine needles for the compost?

I've had a banana tree for about a year that is about 3-4 feet high. It was attacked by knats- so I put it outside. The nursery I purchased it from said it could surivive outdoors with temperatures going as low as -20 degrees. It was outside for one day covered (at about 40 degrees) and the whole thing wilted. If I just leave it, can it revive in the spring? or have I murdered the poor thing?

The snow just melted a couple weeks ago and the sun has been out. I would like to apply my 16-16-16 (triple 16) fertilizer but I am afraid may be too early. I am new homeowner.
Are there any other lawn maintenance duties I should be performing first?
Thanks in advance!
