Emerald Green Arborvitae makes for a nice evergreen hedge and privacy screen for the yard. It is also cold hardy and only grows to about 12' to 14' tall when mature, perfect for the fenceline. There are other varieties of arborvitae which grow larger, some as high as 60'..

There are lots of plamts you could use as a screen.Whatever you do forget conifers. They qrow very quickly and before you know it they are huge and have taken all the light as well as taking all the moisture out of the soil with their roots. In fact whatever you choose the same will apply to other fast growing plants, they also can be too big to manage very quickly. For that reason I wouldn't reccoment Laurel either.
You do not say wether you already have a fence along the boundary. You could try fixing some trellis along the top and growing some climbing plants such as evergreen Honeysuckle or passion flower giving you some colour as well.
Then you could cosider some hedging plants to grow against the boundary .Aucuba is a nice laurel type plant to consider with lighy green vareigated leaves. Also Griselinia, escalonia berberis or pyracantha would be good evergreen options.Failing that you could try irish yew or euonymus but i think box would take too long.
Go to a proper garden centre(not B&Q) get some helpful advice and look around at what you like and what you can afford.they will point you in the right direction, Good Luck!

Italian cypress can form a pretty impenetrable wall if you plant it a bit closer than usual, and don't wrap them with fishing line. They aren't all that fast growing, but they'll go up and up for miles. Once it's the right height, just chop the top off. Usually, about the bottom two feet or so will be bare, but you can plant rosemary around the bottom.

Other varieties of cypress may be slightly better suited to your purpose.

If you're in the right area, bamboo is a lot faster, and just as private. Of course, you have to take certain precautions to keep them from spreading.

Oleander grows fast enough, but is somewhat limited by climate, and of course, the leaves are poisonous... and surprisingly sharp.

Pomegranite trees are not exactly fast growing, or evergreen, but they can get thick enough to make a good privacy screen, especially if you don't bother to pick the fruit. Dwarf varieties grow out straight to the ground, and re-seeding is common. Plus, they have ferocious thorns, pretty flowers, and they attract humming birds.

If it's privacy you're searching for at a fast growing pace then you don't want large evergreen trees. Try redtips, they're great and grow fast. But, Hybrid Willows are the fastest growing trees we know of for shade, privacy, wind protection, and soil conservation.

Box gives tight cover.

Spruce grows quick, but dies out on the lower branches after a while and needs replacing.

Thorn hedges are hard to get through.

Visit your local garden store and they will be able to help you decide.

I think the fastest growing plant for a hedge would be Leylandii.
Let it grown to the height you want then just keep it trimmed.

English laurel grows quickly and grows dense enough not to be seen through.
