I think there are too many that look so similar.

why is this?

I mean it should not be too hard to choose, since they all look very similar.

There are a lot of perennials that look very similar, but there are also hundreds of varieties that are very different... although they are not always easy to find. However, if you live in a very harsh climate (say temps. to -30 or colder) it is true that your selections are limited. Where I live my winter low temp is usually around 0 deg. and my favorite "different" perennials are:

Blue poppy (a true blue flower!) http://www.amaturagardenia.com/bilder/plants/160/Meconopsis_betonicifolia.jpg

Chocolate Cosmos (it smells like chocolate!)http://www.paghat.com/images/cosmos2_jul.jpg

giant lilly (a 9' tall lilly and it smells fantastic!) http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~gdk/stabotanic/jpegs/powJuly05_1.jpg

Slate black Hellebore (how cool is a black flower?!!) http://www.srgc.org.uk/discus/messages/283/7029.jpg

Maybe those are some decent ideas for something different? If you want ideas for more unusual plants, then just say so! It also helps to mention either where you live or what hardiness zone you are in so that your options can be narrowed in on.

You can get perennials with colours ranging from purples through blues, pinks , reds, oranges, yellows and whites. In other words just about anything you want.
If you are planning your garden try to be a little bit Conservative.Too many different colours and you garden will look like the kind of visual assault you get in municipal parks in summer - bad taste1
Yellows and blues go well together or let your favourite colour predominate and plant some white which goes with anything.
have a look through a gardening book for ideas. You can try doing round a garden centre but bear in mind they usually only stock certain types just as they are coming into flower to help them sell.a book will help you plan a flowering succession throughout the seasons.

Maybe some do look similar, but there's so many more that don't,ie, Lambs Ears, ferns, Butterfly bush, carnations, roses, echinecea, pampas grass, astilbe, pansies. None of these look like each other.
