The house I moved into already has a VERY shallow 15' x 4' "pond", tends to dry out quickly (and algae up) and I'd rather have a deeper one with plants 'n critters and more 'control'. Was created with some sort of liner and rocks (basic river rocks, 1" diameter give or take). Assuming I have to completely empty all rocks and pull liner and then just "dig" - but any other suggestions? New liner vs. prefab stuff (can I mix)? How deep? Filters? Had landscaping company give me a basic estimate and it exceeded 6K, want to do something for (quite) a bit less than that....

The plant gets mostly sun during the day. It is in my backyard in San Diego, about a mile inland from the beach. It is watered well by drip system every third day. It is flourishing after being transplanted from another location. When it was transplanted (about two months ago), I cut it back and added soil ammendment and slow release fertilizer to the planting hole. One branch is loaded with very tiny greenish white flowers. They seem to be falling off before they fully develop (but they do seem to be opening). The blossoms are supposed to be very fragrant at night, but I don't smell anything. It has been getting cooler at night (60-68 degrees) here for the past week or so. Could this be why it's not fragrant?
I planted this plant for its fragrance, so I'm very dissapointed that I can't smell anything and would like to know if something I am doing is causing the flowers to drop, or perhaps the nursery sold me a mis-labelled plant.
Thank you

Sounds weird, but I just moved into a new cottage and there is a small yard with thousands of house flies that swarm up when you walk across the grass. They have not left in the week that I've been here, and none of the other neighbors seem to have the problem. On the surface nothing seems to be wrong, except for the flies. There's no garbage, compost, etc. that I am aware of. What could this be from? (Looking for helpful answers, please)

In your experience, what has it cost you? Extra points if you live in the DFW area and can recommend someone! I knocked down the hive but they remain in a location that is hard to get to w/o getting stung, so please don't tell me to do it myself by knocking them down- Thanks.

My decking has been down for two years now but looking sad with the ravages of the weather. I am going to treat it before the bad weather sets in but can anyone tell me the best, and cheapest, way to clean off the slippery green mould/algae that seems to have taken hold. I do have a pressure washer to use but people tell me that rasies the grain on the wood and anyway we're on a hosepipe ban!

If I understand correctly, they are not perennial. I used to work at a restaurant, and the boss (owner) had an herb garden at home from which she brought fresh herbs for soups and casseroles and such. Sometime in the fall, she would bring the entire basil plants to the restaurant and we (the underling cooks) would strip the leaves off the plants for making large quantities of pesto.
So, I've been prunig it periodically, all summer long. I enjoy the fragrance of the plant and feed the prunings to the rabbit (who LOVES it). But, I'd like to make pesto with the leaves as a grand finale...
I live in south Texas (San Antonio). And it's still pretty warm outside.
So, anybody know when (if) I should pull up my sweet basil to chop up the leaves for pesto?

But the new location has rocky, sandy soil. How should I prepare the new spot to maximize the chances of its survival? Should I dig extra deep and dump potting soil in there? What's a good supplement for this kind of soil? Any other advice?

it is all over grown and a mix of poor grass, nettles etc - a real mess - what would be the cheapest and easiest way to both tidy this up and keep it in future? Was considering chips or bark..the incline is about 45degress and uneven making using a lawn mower (and planting grass) I think an unlikely option.. also how much is gardening fees these days.. how much would it cost for someone to do this?

Many thanks in advance - have no clue in this area..
