Sounds weird, but I just moved into a new cottage and there is a small yard with thousands of house flies that swarm up when you walk across the grass. They have not left in the week that I've been here, and none of the other neighbors seem to have the problem. On the surface nothing seems to be wrong, except for the flies. There's no garbage, compost, etc. that I am aware of. What could this be from? (Looking for helpful answers, please)

I go with the buried body theory, there is definatly something dead to have so many flies and no other neighbor has. Maybe you live on top a cemetary, they moved the head stones but left the bodies!

OK here go's it could be fertilizer like bone meal or fish meal like some of the others are sayitng, smell/ look to see if any animals have died close by. Check to see where the spend most of there time that will be the most likely souse. To control them you can put out some sticky paper so when they site there they stay there or just spray them but I dont like that .

If there isn't anything gross or dying that is drawing them, it could be very moist soil where they are laying their eggs. You might want to try a back yard fogger to shoo them away or something stronger.
