I have a hot water tank in my house which is fed by a cold water tank situated in the loft (not mains). I want to convert the loft space into a proper room and therefore want to get rid of the cold water tank. Is there a reason why the cold water tank feeds into the hot water cylinder, and if so what is it? Can I not have hot water cylinder fed by mains water?

Is there any type of palm tree that can grow outside in Mo? I suppose I would have to settle for one in a planter and move it inside. If so what type has an interesting trunk and typical fronds? How large can I expect it to grow? Would my brother be able to send me one from California successfully? How could it best be shipped? I am also looking for inexpensive artificial palm trees for church table decorations. Also does anyone know of a discount outlet for artificial palm trees 4-8 ft. tall? Thanks.

I want to build a wall clock, and I cant find where to buy a clock mechanism. The only solution I can think of is taking the mechanism from another clock.

I know that there are gay couples out there , but it seems a bit much to think that every other couple is gay. Or the DIY staff pics out gay couples beecause they themselves are gay and playing favorites.

I need to put in some GFCI outlets in the kitchen, bathroom and grage. But how do I know which ones to buy? I looked at Menards and was told that I want to get one that carries enough power for whatever I am going to plug in... ie. microwave, hair dryer. But how do I figure it out? And why do some cost more than others?

I have a Home Improvement for Dummies book that says that if you stick the wires in the holes in the back of the switch, it is less reliable than wrapping the wire around the screws and tighting them. But when I took out the switch that was there, the wires were stuck in the holes in the back. The house is 25 years old and I assume that is the way it was done then. I don't think the previous home owner would have changed any of the switches.

So is one way really less reliable than the other? I plan to replace more of them and my instinct tells me to put them in the way I take them out.... but that's not what the book says!

How do you remove oil stains from your driveway? I have tried several degreasers and even have used muratic acid. The problem with muratic is that is leaves white spots in the concrete which looks worse than the oil. Some of the degreasers that I have used just dont do the job.

A few years ago I put Pergo Red Oak floors in my kitchen. Now I'd like to continue it from the kitchen into my dining room. The problem is that Pergo no longer makes this particular color/style and none can be found anywhere on the internet (eBay, Craigslist, Bob Villa, etc). Pergo does make a similar product that they say is compatible in color/style (close but not exact match). So my question is - should I continue with the red oak that is now available, or do I go with a different style/color - like Mahogony, Cherry, Birch, Ash, etc? What would be less dorky - different shade of oak, or different wood completely?

I'll add that there is only a 30" passage between the kitchen and dining room, so it's really two separate rooms - not like one room opens into another (like a great room).

How can I tie off a quilt top as opposed to having it stitched? I'm trying to tie a quilt top for my first grandchild (a boy!!!) and all I keep coming up with are what could become uncomfortable knots. Any immediate information on this would be greatly appreciated as "Allen" is due in mid-March.

We're in the process of a kitchen remodel and about to lay 18x18 travertine tiles for the countertops. My main question is do I need to use cement backerboard or would a plywood base be good enough? The tiles have been and will continue to be sealed very well. We plan on using flexible mortar. Is the backerboard simply for water/mold issues, flexibility or what? Also, what are the risks of using plywood. Thanks in advance!
