A few years ago I put Pergo Red Oak floors in my kitchen. Now I'd like to continue it from the kitchen into my dining room. The problem is that Pergo no longer makes this particular color/style and none can be found anywhere on the internet (eBay, Craigslist, Bob Villa, etc). Pergo does make a similar product that they say is compatible in color/style (close but not exact match). So my question is - should I continue with the red oak that is now available, or do I go with a different style/color - like Mahogony, Cherry, Birch, Ash, etc? What would be less dorky - different shade of oak, or different wood completely?

I'll add that there is only a 30" passage between the kitchen and dining room, so it's really two separate rooms - not like one room opens into another (like a great room).

If I understand right..., these two laminates won't "butt" up against each other? If they don't and it's divided by something I bet you can get away with the similar color. No-one will probably even notice but you if they are real similar.

If they are going to come into contact with each other I'd break into a different color at a doorway somewhere. It would look more like you switched wood for a different room and less like you had an unsuccessful match. In the end I say what you think is the best is the right choice. If people are in your house to judge you by your flooring preference, then throw them out!! Good luck...Hope this helped!

A lot of your preferences is going to be up to you.If you decide to go with a different style or color of wood make sure that they blend together at the transitional point in your doorway(cherry would be close in color, but the grain would be different). The other option is to continue with different style/color that is compatible from Pergo.

I would put in the look alike red oak if it looks close enough. What i mean is if it looks similar, it could be goofy. It may look like you tried to find a type of wood that kind of matched it. And if that is so, go with wood that matches the room.

Well you want the color to flow through your house,no sudden color changes ,for example if you go inside some ones house and one room is purple and the next school bus yellow,it's just not very comfortable,if you walk through a house with different shades of the same basic colors,it feels complete and comfortable with no drastic changes,I would be very picky even with the reds, that they don't contrast, such as an orange color red,and a bluer shade of red, they just don't flow.

Use a transitional theshold and install a ceramic tile floor. In the future, obviously, always plan for the possible inclusion of future remodeling. The only way at this point, if you want hardwood, is to redo the entire project. That would insure a uniform appearence.

no choice here would be "dorky" you are the only one who will notice the differences because you are doing the replacing and having the work done...people just don't notice the floors of homes that much, if they are of a proper hue and clean.
and one can always employ the use of area rugs to eliminate any real noticable differences in wood style.
