I have been in construction for over 30 years and have seen some of the stupidest things done you could believe.
The first was a concrete footing under a house that was over 2 feet wide and 4 feet deep. That job cost me a contractors license.
The worst thing was a ceiling fan that had been put up on a plastic ceiling light box. It turned loose and killed a six year old girl.
There has been many more in between those two, but I saw the little girl a couple days before it happened and told the parents the fan was loose.
I was going to build a room addition for them, and told them I would fix the fan while I was there, but I didn't get there in time, and it broke the little girls neck when it fell.
A fan is not hard to install, but never and I repeat never mount one to a plastic box.
Make sure the box is very secure and I will repeat that also. Make sure the box is very secure.
Other than that, just read the directions that come with it, because every fan is different but not but a little.
If the box isn't secure, you got to get down and dirty. or rather up and dirty. Meaning in the attic and they are dirty.
Be careful to walk on the ceiling joist or you will be down and dirty, meaning back to the floor you started at, lol.
You will need to cut a 2x4 to fit snug between the joist. Too tight or too losse will crack your ceiling.
Screw the new METAL BOX to it where you can position the box so it will hit the existing hole and have someone on a ladder below you to keep the box level with the bottom of the ceiling and run screws into the ends of the 2X4 through the ceiling joist.
If you try to nail it, there is a good, good chance you will break the sheet rock or plaster or it is too long or too short you also run the same risk.
Ok, you said you like smartass answers, and looking at your picture I had to wonder, if I put it up for you can we have sex while swinging from it?????????
Just kidding. I can't tale care of the home work now, LOL.
Good luck and God Bless
Dennis

No. Becase the new fan may not match up the to the old fan bracket. The most important thing to remember is that this is about 15-30 pounds hanging over you head and if it fell (on someone) it's gonna hurt. Just make sure the the box is screwed in a joist or the box is is able to supports the weight of the fan.

You have good answers here, the best one being to make sure the electricity is off before beginning your work. But I have to add........Make sure the electrical box that you are attaching the fan to is supported correctly. I know you said there was already a fan there...and yes it should be an easy switch but I have seen many, many fans just put up where an old light fixture used to be. Good luck!!

No it's not hard to install a ceiling fan with a light in place of the one that has no light. All that you have to do is follow the mfg.wiring diagram.

If you have to ask, follow the directions carefully. Be sure and use a fan box for mounting and if you install a remote control you won't have to run a switch leg. The answer to your ? is no it's not all that hard.

With the instructions included with your new fan, you shouldn't have any trouble. Many people think it is way more complicated than it really is.
