I know that they are supposed to spark back by the brushes. But is it normal for them to spark if they are brand new. I mean I just took it out of the box to try it and it was sparking. Is that ok?

I've been the personal asst. to a Dr & his wife for 4 years & after aiding them in the prep work for many dinners & get together I have come to the conclusion that out of the dozen or so pot holders they have only one offers even mild protection from heat so I have decided to buy them a set of oven mitts/pot holders for the winter holiday this year. However I myself do not cook or buy things for my kitchen & really have no idea what the best oven mitts are. Judging by the various ones they currently own they would probably not use a large rubber one. Their largest mitt comes just past the wrist. They really seem to enjoy having upwards of 10 guests over for dinner & there lack of proper oven mitts has been the ban of their hosting existence for the past several years. I would prefer nothing gaudy or bulky but that is high quality and offers protection. Every year they give me a wonderful well thought out gift and I would like to get them something other then a bottle of wine.

Hi all,

My fiance and I were sitting watching Harry Potter last night (woo!) When we heard this weird metal scratching sound. We thought it was the pipes acting up because the sound was coming from our kitchen, near our washer and dryer. We ignored the sound until I heard my fiance yell, "It's a mouse! I knew it!!" I looked up just in time to see a little black mouse crawl into where the burner on our stove is.

A couple questions:
Whats the best method to get this little bugger?
Is it safe to use our stove?
I've seen him twice now, both times being the same mouse. Is it likely that there are more? We live in an apartment complex of 8 apartments.

I really just don't know how to handle this. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

We are getting our basement remodeled and they gave us a quote for 19K. Does this sound reasonable for 350sqft?

I live in an apt complex. I was just vacuuming when all of a sudden, the vacuum and some of the lights went out. I checked the breakers, turned the one on and off and it didn't do anything. I shut them all off, then on (had them off for just a second), still didn't matter. The same lights and my vacuum are still out. We don't have anything else in the plug I was using and I didn't have other things going on while vacuuming. (i.e. Dishwasher, tv, radios were all off). Could there be something wrong with the breaker? This never happened since we've lived here. One thing that popped in my mind is the construction they are doing in the unit below. Could all the electrical tools they are using have blown my fuse? I called the maintenance and am expecting someone to come look at it, but I can't just ask if all the stuff they are working with below me did this.

I recently rented a condo owned by another person. The main entry door requires one of those electronic pass devices (not a card reader) but one that you hold up to the keyless entry. The condo association wants over 100.00 dollars for a duplicate. Is there anywhere I can take the only one I have and get a duplicate made?

I'm not quite an electrician, but am trying to be inventive with my limited knowledge, and for my current project, I need to know what type of wire (available at Home Depot) will get the hottest when current passes through it. I'd assume its copper. Am I right? I'd also assume that the larger the diameter, the hotter it gets, am I right about this too?

My kitchen has tile countertops on a concrete base. The sink is cast, with some hard (ceramic?) coating. I HATE the sink with a passion. I've chipped it badly in places & want to replace it.

The builders told me I couldn't have a stainless steel sink because I have the tile countertops.

WHY ? What are my alternatives ? Any good DIY links (I already have Michael Holigans web page & video for sink replacement).

Thanks.

I remember my mother having a dust mop that had a groove around the top into which she poured a small amount of oil, it then dripped into the mop and made it slightly oily. What is the modern equivalent of that?
