What I think I'm seeing is "the very first par that is off the main part" is probably the chuck that holds the drill bit.
If it is unscrewing off the gearbox drive shaft, then the screw inside that holds it on the shaft has come loose.

Get the chuck open and take the bit out. There should be a loose screw inside the chuck. Thread the chuck back onto the end of the drive shaft, and then use a screwdriver to reinstall the screw. You will probably have to hold the chuck with a big pair of pliers.

And - if I have misunderstood... sorry. Any chance you can post a picture?

You could put in larger screws as the other answers say, however this might not always be possible -different sizes and the screw heads might not look right for example. You could buy some wood filler putty from a DIY shop and put that into the screw holes. I would put the putty in then put the handle back on before the putty sets though you might need to tape the door handle on while the putty sets (it's easier that way than screwing through the hardened putty) If it all goes wrong of course, you could cheat completely - superglue the metal of the door handle and the screws in place and hope that the glue holds up to use it will get.

I realize this may a little late, but better late than never. The first answerer is right to a point, but he fails to mention that the screw in the middle of the chuck, that you need to reinsert in the end of the drill motor shaft, will be a left handed thread. That is it will thread in in the opposite direction than most bolts, or screws. It will turn in going counterclockwise.

Probably it cannot be repaired. Carry it back if it is a Craftsman, but I know that you need to finish the job now and not later. I'm sorry I do not know what to tell you
