Southebys and Christies are both great places to get evaluations to see whether they will accept your silver. Understand that they only take the cream of the crop and having the initial evaluation will give you a future direction if it is not accepted. There are antique consigners and dealers who also specialize in antique silver who are quite reputatble and they both can refer you to the best option for your items.

Not every piece rates auctioning at Sotheby's.

Start with E-bay and check the prices asked and offered for similar pieces. That'll give you an idea of the market value. Expect less if you go through a dealer, who will either offer you far less than its true value or take a big commision for selling it on consignment.

That, of course, assumes that the piece is yours. If not, cultivate a relationship with a reputable local dealer in stolen merchandise. This is useful even if you don't need to move something hot. After all, good fences make good neighbors.
