I know that they are supposed to spark back by the brushes. But is it normal for them to spark if they are brand new. I mean I just took it out of the box to try it and it was sparking. Is that ok?

The sparking is not a problem. It happens when the commutator plates run past the brushes and they briefly lose contact. The sparking should decrease as the brushes 'break in' and wear to match the curvature of the commutators.

When you look at the commutator end, (where the carbon brushes touch the copper plates on the end of the armature), you will see a slight sparking when the drill is running and that's normal. However, you should not see little fingers of sparks trying to follow the curve of the armature part or all the way around as the motor turns, that means there's a dead section in the commutator and it's defective, or one side of the fields assembly is not carrying the same voltage as the other.

They will spark slightly until they are broken in but if the drill is making grinding sounds and sparking a lot I would suggest to take it back and get another one.

All drills do not have exposed brushes anymore..but alot still do..if it does, as suggested before me..alot of correct answers..by all means NEVER squirt water in them unless you want to shock yourself and ruin the drill
