My wife says cold air kills germs. So the temp in my house is always cold. I say its better to be warm so I like to turn it up. What do you guys think?

Actually, I'm not even sure it's the meter. It's a bit confusing. I've got a pretty large plate (at least a foot in diameter) in my front yard, by the curb. The plate doesn't seem like it comes up very easily (I haven't tried too hard because I figure that, if it's supposed to come up, it would fairly easily).

On the plate, there is a semi-flat plastic cap with a star pattern, and a bump in the center. It was turnable, so I made a sort of key for it out of a piece of laminate flooring (I cut a notch out of the center so that it fit over the bump). I turned this all the way to the right, and I still have water.

Also on the plate, there is something like the end of a bolt. The head is square and about 1.5" in diameter. It seems loose--I can wiggle it pretty well, so I don't think it's a valve, but I can't seem to turn it.

Is anybody familiar with this sort of system? Do I need to try harder at lifting this plate? Or maybe try turning the bolt?

I just bought a new house this year. It’s drafty and heating is inefficient. I will have to work on that in the New Year. But in the meantime what is the best strategy for turning down the temperature when I am not home? I have 3 scenarios. I am not home all day, I frequently am gone for a night or two, and I will be gone for 2 weeks. Does it make a difference on what you would turn the heat down to?

For the 2 week period, I am worried as I live in a milder climate (cool) with temperatures hitting freezing especially at night, and about a 10% chance of a drastic cold snap! How warm would I want the house to stay if there is a chance it is really cold outside?

I have a new sewing machine (singer) that I bought for myself last week as a Christmas present. I have pretty fabric in different colors and patterns. I know how to thread the bobbin and the needle. I also have two mannequins (pretty close to my size! I couldn't get them any closer to my size if I tried!).

What are your tips for me? What are some helpful sewing websites that you know about?

I'm not sure if there is a special paint that can handle the heat from the lamp or not.

I have a cute little fake black "stove" that is really a Fan blown electric space heater. It has 4 switches: Its 750 or 1500 Watts (2 switches). Plus the Fan switch and a switch that turns on a light that is suppose to make the fake fire look real. I love it as I have a tiny house and it's like my own little fireplace! It started to give off a funny smell the other day, and zip...it fried I guess. The only switch that works is the light(FIRE) switch. Now, the heater parts never worked unless the blower(fan switch) was also "on". Now there is no fan and neither 750 or 1500 works. Can I take the back off and try to fix it? I know nothing about electric heaters, but have a few basic repair skills. New they sell for about $180.00. I cant afford a new one. This one is about 18 months old. Thanks.

I am getting conflicting advise on removing snow from the roof of my house. Some have told me that the snow creates too much pressure for the roof and must be removed. This sounds reasonable because in Minnesota we can acumulate up to 3 feet of snow on the roofs over the winter. Others have told me that removing the snow also removes a layer of insulation that the snow creates by being there. This also sound plausible and I would hate to have to spend more dough heating this place cause its expensive!!
What do you think leave it or start shoveling?

I have true red and navy curtains, comforter, and bed skirt. What color should I paint the walls? I can't really do the red or navy, it'll be too dark. Any suggestions?

and I'm painting it beige or tan. But I'm trying to think of an accent color, like you know the color that you put on one wall. I was thinking like a dark purple or purpleish? Would that look bad? any reccomendations?

I need to reline my sofa cushions either with foam cut to size or with firmer cotton [if that is available at all] and need to get it done locally in DFW. Please answer if you have had any sofa jobs done in Dallas.

Thanks.

I bought some poinsettias and I've been watering them but they are wilting and they are dying and I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. They live inside and they are taken care of but don't have excessive sun. Is there something special I should do? Thanks

Hi, I have a newer townhouse (6 years old). The fuse box has a main switch at the bottom that says 125. Above that, half the slots have those switch type fuses and the rest are empty. Both of the two outlets in the garage are on one fuse. I would like these outlets to be on seperate fuses. Do I need permits and electricians to install the extra fuse? Thanks a bunch.

I've just plumbed a washing machine and dishwasher into my new build house. I drained all the hot water but when I disconnected the plumbing under the sink a fair amount of bright blue water shot out - what could this be?

Is it anything to worry about?
