Some have larger bowls, some have stronger motors, some have it so that the top flips up, some have it so that the bowl drops down.
My personal preference is the Professional Series because it has a large bowl and stronger motor. However, depending on what you want a mixer to do, they're all good.
I've added a KitchenAid link that shows the size of bowls and the tilt vs drop down options.

Kitchen Ais were the orginals, I have an old one that was my mothers, its extremely heavy and can be used for bread making and other heavy duty purposes, however I have a like model thats great for whipping up cookies, its made by a different vendor but works fine, and is a whole lot less to lug around.

Mainly the wattage. This means a stronger motor as the wattage goes up. Most the cheaper ones you see are 200 or 250 watt. I have one and love it. I did laugh though when watching Emeril and he tried using the grinder attachment and it wouldn't work. He was trying to make sausages.

Some have bigger bowls or better attachments.
Can't go wrong with a Kitchen aid mixer though...
